Note: Will be posting Part 2 of Two Birds, One Stone in a day or so, but I just had to get this out after watching Abandon All Hope… If you haven't seen the ep yet, don't let me spoil you. Enjoy!
Sam peered out Bobby's front window onto the darkened front porch at his brother, who sagged lifelessly against a wooden bench. All that remained of the six pack that Dean had taken out with him 3 hours earlier were the shards of glass from the smashed bottles that lay at his feet. The bottle of whiskey set out next to him was three quarters of the way gone.
To the untrained eye, Dean appeared to be passed out. But Sam knew much better than that.
He slowly opened the creaking front door and stepped out on the porch, the broken glass crackling and popping under his shoes as he turned to gaze at his brother. Dean had tears streaming down his cheeks, his eyes red and swollen and defeated. He didn't bother to wipe the tears away.
"Don't," said Dean, his voice rough and even deeper than usual.
Sam sat down on the bench next to Dean and grabbed the whiskey bottle, taking a swig. "Not going to," he said, handing the bottle back to his brother.
Dean reached for the bottle and took more than a swig. He finished it off and then smashed the bottle to the ground, the glass flying up into the air on impact with the wooden beams of the porch. Then he leaned forward, put his head in his hands, and began to sob.
All Sam could do was lay his hand lightly on his brother's quivering back and shed a few silent tears of his own. There wasn't anything to say.
