The façade was firmly in place

Construct, perfect, become

Simple measures – no one would know

All that was left was numb

.

Wouldn't, couldn't let them witness

The void being inside

Show of normal, sustaining them

Nothing left but to hide

.

Their feelings of obligation

Would compel them to act

Could not persuade them to believe

Nothing was left intact

.

The mask had begun to falter

Left on for far too long

Desperate for them not to see

That something was still wrong

.

My insincere smile faltered

Eyes showed nothing but void

Their contemplation, surmising

I still remained destroyed

.

How could I have let it happen

Those thoughts were buried deep

Those eyes, his grin—cause of the break

The mask began to seep

.

Easy enough for me to fix

Was only a small crack

Nothing a lie couldn't cover

To lead them off my track

.

I lacked the time to repair it

Too quickly they returned

Memories, reminders, constant

Scorched as if they had burned

.

As more strength went into hiding

More cracks began to form

Knowing I must change it quickly

Can't show it's not the norm

.

Solace away from the pretense

Needing to get away

Their eyes, speculations, pity

Worse than my own dismay

.

Unable to take the mask off

Too many prying eyes

Set off to where it all started

Freely to shed this guise

.

Finally upon the meadow

Able to drop this sham

Piece by piece, the mask fell apart

Collapsing like a dam

.

Able to think, to breathe, to be

At last, no need to hide

Peaceful, quiet, nothing at all

Just this place could provide

.

Memories from the past - this place

Attempting to get in

I let the pain wash over me

Conceding to their win

.

Succumbed to who I was inside

Finally, left to be

No mask to eclipse who I was

At last I could be me

Author's Note:

I know, I usually write long stories full of humor...so it makes absolute sense to submit a poem for a tragic contest. lol. I saw this contest and thought I'd give it a shot and this has been sitting on my computer for a while, I wasn't sure if I was going to enter it but I thought I would just suck it up and post it. (Plus it was an nice excuse to take a break from studying)
