Mr. Fix-It

Did it start with the things, and grow from there?

Or were the things really a substitute? Practice, maybe. Or placeholders – stuff I actually could fix, stuff that was fixable, till I could take a shot at stuff that really mattered.

I fiddled with stuff from an early age, of course. It was pure magic, getting that little whir or buzz or spark that meant you'd got it right, you'd put something back together that needed help.

Of course, you can't really 'fix' anything that matters. You can't fix people.

I know that.

But somehow, I've never really accepted it.
