Sam sat shaking in the Principles office as she waited for Cassie.
She didn't know what to say. How could she tell Cassie that Janet was dead? To lose one mother was devastating, but to lose another…how could she explain that.
So she sat waiting. Daniel had offered to do this but Sam knew it had to be her.
Slowly the door to the office opened and the Principle walked in with Cassie in tow. Cassie saw Sam, she could see her red eyes and wet cheeks. She could tell she had been crying. Entranced Cassie sat down opposite Sam and the Principle left them alone.
"Sam what's wrong?"
Sam brushed away some of the tears on her face.
"Cassie there was an accident. We were off world; there was an ambush. Your mum came to help us…"
Tears began to fall from Cassie's eyes as she slowly suspected what had happened
"She was helping someone, Daniel was with her…"
Tears fell freely from Sam's eyes and Cassie stood up abruptly.
"No"
Sam stood up and grabbed her arms. She looked at her with sadness.
"I'm sorry Cassie"
Cassie tried to turn away but Sam held her tightly and hugged her.
Tears fell from Cassie's eyes and anger filled her heart.
"No, she's not dead. You're lying, stop lying."
She pushed away from Sam and ran to the wall.
All was silent for a few moments, there wasn't a sound.
Suddenly Cassie dropped to the floor and started sobbing.
Sam watched her in tears before slowly walking over to Cassie and holding her.
