It was the beginning of a bad day for Maddy Young. She was already two hours late for work due to having her car towed to the garage after it breaking down on the dual carriage way on the way to Holby City hospital. The driver of the tow truck wasn't the easiest guy to get on with and no matter how much Maddy pleaded with him, he would only drive her to the garage and wouldn't drive her to Holby City hospital. Luckily, her best friend, Sam Strachen had a day off, and he was kind enough to come and collect her from the garage and give her a ride to work. Now, Maddy was rushing through the doors of AAU, sliding slightly as her shoes were soaked from the heavy rain, likewise, the rest of her body. She looked like a drowned rat. Maddy came to a very unstable halt in front of Linden Cullen, a top consultant at the hospital, and her boss. Great, thought Maddy. She was hoping to avoid him. "Maddy, what happened? You look like you've been to hell and back." Maddy was quite surprised at the sympathy in his voice. She had expected him to be telling her off. After all, it wasn't the first time she had been late.
"It's a long story." said Maddy.
"well go and get yourself dried off and i'll see you back on the ward when you are ready."
At this, Maddy smiled at him gratefully, then turned and walked away. If she had caught him in a good mood, maybe this day wasn't going to be that bad after all. apparently, that thought wasn't going to hold true. Just half an hour later she was back on the ward again. As she arrived consultant nurse Mark Williams approached her. "You dried off then?" He asked her.
"yeah," she replied.
"Good. Here's your first patient of the day. This is Mr Hicks, presented with abdominal pains and vomiting."
Maddy took a look at the notes in Marks hand and went over to Mr Hicks. "Right Mr Hicks," said Maddy. "I'm Doctor young." But before she could say anything else Mr Hicks vomited again. This time all over Maddy. Great, thought Maddy. It looks like it's just going to be one of those days.
