A/N: songfic – My Last Breath, by Evanescence. Characters are not named; tell me who you think they might be. Lyrics are in italic. I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular; category is because the song came to my mind when writing something that IS in the category.

Hold on to me love

You know I can't stay long

All I wanted to say was I love you and I'm not afraid

It had taken her so long to realize that this was what she wanted. Finding it was both the best and worst thing she had ever done. And now it was being taken from her. Every moment she held on to life was a gift. She saw him coming towards her, wanting to be there for her last moments.

Can you hear me?

Can you feel me in your arms?

She wondered why he had not come sooner. Certainly he had known the moment that she collapsed. It did not matter now. In this moment, everything was clear. They had but a very short time left together, and she intended to remember it for all eternity.

Holding my last breath

Safe inside myself

Are all my thoughts of you

Sweet raptured light it ends here tonight

Now she knew that she had always loved him and that she always would, unless the afterlife relieved her of the person that she had been. He was there, she was in his arms, and all was right with the world. "I love you," she said, wishing to make her last words count for something.

I'll miss the winter

A world of fragile things

Look for me in the white forest

Hiding in a hollow tree (come find me)

As she stared death in the face, he began to come to terms with what was happening. In a few short moments, he would lose the one thing that had ever truly mattered to him. The only thing that mattered now was making sure that his last memory of her was the very essence of what she had been.

I know you hear me

I can taste it in your tears

The light she saw became brighter. He knew he had just seconds to speak to her. "I will miss you forever," he said. He began to cry.

Holding my last breath

Safe inside myself

Are all my thoughts of you

Sweet raptured light it ends here tonight

"Don't cry yet," she told him. "I'm not gone yet. Just keep me here, stay with me."

Closing your eyes to disappear

You pray your dreams will leave you here

But still you wake and know the truth

No one's there

The glimmer in her eyes began to fade. "I love you," he said. He did not stop crying. If anything, the teardrops came more heavily than ever before.

Say goodnight

Don't be afraid

Calling me calling me as you fade to black

"Goodbye," she said. Her eyes closed one last time. She was gone.
