Disclaimer:
I don't own Vampire Hunter D, or anything related to it. This is purely a fan-written, no-profit, fiction.
NB:
This is a D/Leila angsty-romance fic. It's set far in the future. Leila is about 40 by the end (ewww) and D is ... um ... Who know's really?
Enjoy.
The Last of the Bloodline.
The year is 13,005AD. Our numbers are dwindling, disappearing, dying out. We rely on the union between Vampires and humans to create us, but that union is all but dead. There are only a few Dunpeal left. I should be thankful for this.
My name is D, and I have vowed not to rest until all the Vampires, Dunpeal and Barbarois are dead. I share my ambition with a female hunter. A human named Leila.
My mother told me, before she died, that if humans and Dunpeal's were to procreate, the Vampire bloodline would not flow through the child's veins. But I cannot take that chance.
As the number of Vampires dwindle and die, whether by my hand or the hand of some one else, I can feel the almost uncontrollable urge for blood seeping its way through my veins and into my skull. Many years of keeping my face expressionless has allowed me safe haven from Leila's fear. If only my own fear was just as controlled.
I killed the Barbarois leader with little negative repercussion. The rest of the Barbarois are long dead: Grove saw to that. Leila is not comfortable in this darkness. I can feel the quickened racing of her pulse; almost feeling her blood rushing warm down my throat. But I dare not touch her, for it would cause her demise.
Half Vampire, half human; I hunt and kill my own kind. The bloodlust is easier now, now that we've swapped Vampires for Dunpeal's. I can bare the humane stares they produce when they die, but the way in which Leila reacts is almost too painful. I am afraid that she will leave.
The white orb moon makes the darkness incomplete; hangs in the sky like a candle in a dungeon. On this night, Leila has decided that she loves me. I tell her the same thing I told Charlotte of Meier Link – "You don't know what he's capable of", although I replace the 'he's' with 'I'm'. She turned away, but would not leave.
The parasite that resides within me says it's in the nature of men to say the most inappropriate things at the most inappropriate times. I ignore him.
I watch, helplessly, as Leila ages; but still fights. My bloodlust rears its uncontrollable side once more, now that there are only Vampires left to kill. I am strong enough to control myself, but Leila fights too close; too dangerously. It almost seems as though she wants to be bitten: To be like me.
I remember a time when Leila said she'd had enough: Enough of misery and of death. She'd had enough.
I cannot help but watch as the blood drains from Leila, too stricken with grief to even think about my lust for it. I have done what she could not. I have killed the last Vampire; until the poison in her neck takes over, transferring her into a monster. I cannot think what instinct will drive me to do then. I almost wish I could cry.
Leila, her eyes flicking open, reaches for my hand and I let her. She asks; do you love me now? And I almost laugh. Yes, I tell her. I love you now. I loved you before. I'll love you forever.
There is only one thing we can do. It will complete my duty to this earth, and Leila's duty to her family and herself.
We must journey to the stars. Together. My beautiful-ugly Vampire love and I. A half-breed and a monster; we will be welcomed into The City of the Night where we can be free to love forever. Just like Meier Link and Charlotte before us.
"Our beautiful trip to the stars."
Fin.
