Brendon sits down next to me on the wooden bench, his beautiful blue-green eyes boring into mine; my heart skips a beat. His blonde hair blows in the ticklish sea breeze which makes him look even more dazzling.
When no one is looking-their attention turned elsewhere- Brendon's hand wraps with mine and we hold hands under the table. "Happy Birthday , Joslyn," he smiles.
"Thanks," I beam.
"You look very beautiful today. Well, you always do but…."
My cheeks warm. "Thanks, that's so sweet."
"What's so sweet?" Gwen smirks. I try not to roll my eyes; she barges in whenever Brendon and I are alone. My nose wrinkles as the smell of her overpowering perfume hits it. She always tries to steal people's boyfriends; I hate her guts. The only reason I invited her to my party was to be polite, I didn't expect she'd come…that is, until she found out Brendon was going.
"That-" I begin, trying to come up with a decent lie.
"That my neighbor made my dog a dog house," Brendon finishes for me.
Way to go Brendie!
"Oh," Gwen says, her too red lips curling into a twisted smile, attempting to be sexy, but failing miserably. "I didn't know you had a dog Brendie," she muses flirtatiously. God! She's such a slut!
"Yeah. I've had my dog Kylie for a year now," he says trying to be polite, but slowly getting annoyed. It was freaky how well Brendon and I could read each others emotions.
"Well cool," Gwen giggles. She turns to me now. "Oh Jos! I toooootally forgot to get you a gift! We should just go shopping sometime."
Liar. "Ah, that's okay…at least you could come to my party." Yeah right, just to hit on my almost boyfriend. Before Gwen can reply, the birthday singing starts- friends and family begin to surround me.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you…." Everyone sings. Suddenly, I see a flash of movement about one hundred twenty feet away from me in between the small cathedral of trees…hmm weird. I probably just imagined it.
Then I see it again.
And again.
I try not to get creeped out so I return my attention to the people singing to me. "Happy birthday dear Joslyn…."
And yet again, I see the flash of movement; adrenaline beings to pump through my veins.
"Happy birthday to YOU!" Everyone finshes, the last note the loudest. Although I am slightly warmed by the singing, the adrenaline overpowers the feeling. I am truly freaked out now.
"Well, aren't you gonna blow out the candles?" My best friend Sarah asks. With all my will power, I peel my eyes of the strange flashes and focus them on Sarah.
"Oh course," I say, forcing a smile. As I blow out the big fourteen on my cake, I try not to think about what I just saw. It was probably just some birds fighting or something…I mean, it's not like it was a monster- that would just be silly.
