Hey again; this is going to be my first continuous fan-fiction... I hope you enjoy it... and a Roro without reviews is like an anime without a guy with spiky hair... non-existent. I don't own Death Note (in case you hadn't guessed...)

"Matt... Matt? Can you hear me?" a distant voice echoed around his aching head.

Of course I can bloody hear you... you're an inch away from my ear.

"Matt? I think we've lost him."
What?

"One more, for luck..."

Electricity zapped through him and he gasped with shock, and found he could keep breathing.

"I... I...." Matt panted, "Mello?"

"What's Mello? You've got to concentrate on keeping breathing. In, out, in, out, i--"

"Blond, scar on his face, dressed in leather?"

"I'll look her up."

Matt smiled, in spite of himself. In spite of being in constant agony, in spite of not knowing if Mello was alive or dead, in spite of Kira...

Matt woke up. He was in a hospital bed, bright, shining white linens and that hospital stench. He looked around the room again, and saw who he had first mistaken for a part of the angelic white walls...

"Oh shit... what're you doing here?" he said, lightheartedly, he had never hated Near. And in that instant, he knew... Mello would be here... if he had survived. So. This was it. Mello was dead.

He had never hated Near as much as he did at this moment.

"I am very sorry." Near knew that he knew. Near always knew what you were thinking, in that unnervingly calm way of his.

"How... how... how did he?" whispered Matt, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

"The Death Note, then burnt." Near said, matter-of-factly.

No... no... no... NO! NO! Matt hadn't realised he was screaming out loud before two nurses ran into the room. "NO! NO!"

It took him three and a half hours before he had cried himself out and lapsed into a dreamless sleep.

So. That was my first chapter. I hope this will go on for quite long ^w^ I have a lot of twists and turns laid out and ready to go... so. I'll try to update this about once every three days – I update more often if there are more reviews :P
