Was it worth it?

Narrated by Ponyboy

I walked down the street toward the park with my brothers, and with Two-Bit and Steve. We were finally going to show the Socs not to mess with us greasers, and I wanted to show everyone, including Darry I'm not a little boy no more. I have been through a lot recently. I ran away from home, and I was involved with murder of a Soc named Bob Sheldon along with my best friend Johnny Cade. We fled to an abandon Church in Windrixville, and Johnny cut off my hair and turned it blond. Yeah like, I want my hair turning blond. We also faced hell in the face when we rescued little kids from a fire in the church, and Johnny was injured. Most importantly, the city wants to take me, and Soda away from Darry, and place me in a boy's home. I didn't comfort the idea of being taken away, and I was mad as hell.

We reached the park, and met with Tim and his gang. Tim greeted me and was impressed that me and Johnny killed a Soc. I did not want to remember that awful night about Bob being killed, even though he was drowning me, he was still a human with a soul. Still I kept my mouth shut, and waited for the Socs to appear. I would expect Randy to appear, and beat up some greaser. But I knew Randy wouldn't like it, and no matter what happens, the Socs will still be in top, but Randy has changed his view on us greasers, and that is what I like about him.

We all waited for about half-an hour and I was smoking a stick. Then we heard noises, and we all turned our heads and saw many cars stopping in the far side pf the park. The Soc have come. There were many Socs, but the odds were equal nonetheless. We formed a single line as we waited for the Socs to come. I was near Darry; Darry told me he would protect me, if needed. However, I was not going to let any Soc get the best of me.

As the Socs were coming closer, one thing flashed in my mind, Johnnycake, my best friend nearing the great lord himself. I thought about Johnny, I was going to win this fight for my best friend, but Randy's words still haunt me, what was this fight worth? A few bruises and a little respect? I wouldn't be surprised if someone was killed; still what was I fighting for? For Johnny, or the honor of the gang? My thought seized up as I faced to face with a tall Soc, with a fancy sweater that you could buy for 34 bucks. Sweat started to pour down my body, as everyone, greaser and soc, looked at each other silently. Darry greeted his friend Paul who was Soc. Ironic that Paul and Darry were best buds, and now something as class ruin their friendship. I found that ridiculous.

Then we heard a familiar voice, it was Dally, I turned my head to see him, before everything turned blank for a second as the rumble began. This was my chance, and I would do it for Johnny. I tried to gang up on the Soc, but a few overpowered me, and I cried to Darry for help. An act I hoped to avoid, but sometimes you need help in life. Darry got the soc off me, but more took me down and started beating me to hell. I couldn't move and I almost saw eternal darkness, as I felt the incoming pain I was getting, I heard a voice calling to me! A voice that was all to familiar, it was Johnny. Johnny's voice was soft, but I heard very well. Even though I was ached with pain, his voice warmed my body. His voice only said Stay Gold Ponyboy….

"Johnny" I muttered, I quickly gained consciousness, and the rumble was over. Dally picked me up, and we raced to see Johnny before it was too late. As we rushed to the hospital, I only thought Johnny's words, and all that has happened to us, in the end was it worth it?
