It was so easy to cuddle with Blaine. He was so much shorter, and his head fit easily into Kurt's neck. Kurt would wrap his arms around his torso and pull him impossibly closer, the scent of strawberries and mocha filling his nose. Blaine smelled like home.
Adam was a different story.
The first time Kurt cuddled with Adam was during Adam's favorite movie, The Avengers. It was silly, Kurt thought, but he decided to watch it anyway. They were sitting on the couch, knees barely touching. They both felt slightly awkward, given that they had only gone out for coffee a few times and they still hadn't decided what exactly they were.
Halfway through the film, Adam got up to get the popcorn out of the microwave. When he sat back down, he sat much closer than he had been before. Kurt didn't say anything, because Adam was his boyfriend and that's what boyfriends do. The movie continued, but Kurt wasn't paying much attention to it. He was paying more attention to the way Adam's head was slowly lowering, and the way the entire situation just felt weird and awkward. But he let Adam continue, because Adam was his boyfriend and that's what boyfriends do. Soon Adam's head was resting in the crook of his shoulder, except it wasn't. Adam was much taller than Blaine, he noted, and his head couldn't find that spot. He kept shifting, trying to get comfortable, but it never happened. Everything grew more awkward by the minute, and Kurt noted that Adam didn't smell like strawberries and mocha at all. He smelled like Axe body spray and mint gum, two things that Kurt despised. But Adam was his boyfriend, and this is what boyfriend's do.
So Kurt slumped slightly, allowing Adam's head to fit a tad better. They were silent and unmoving, their heartbeats never matching. Kurt couldn't help but let his mind wander, what with the boring movie and not-even-remotely-enjoyable cuddling. He thought about what it would be like if Blaine was here.
Blaine wouldn't have to shift, his head would automatically fall to that special spot. He would smell like strawberries and mocha, not Axe and mint. His eyes would gently flutter closed, his eyelashes brushing Kurt's neck in the perfect way. Kurt would sigh as his eyes closed too, their heartbeats steadily in sync. Because Blaine was his soul mate, and that's what soul mate's do.
"Kurt?" Adam lifted his head from where it was resting. Kurt had obviously fallen asleep, because the end credits were rolling on the screen. Adam smiled fondly, but Kurt couldn't seem to return that smile. So he simply muttered something about it being late. Adam agreed and kissed him on the cheek as he quietly exited the apartment. Because Adam was his boyfriend, and that's what boyfriends do.
Only, if it were his soul mate, he wouldn't be hearing the soft click of the front door. Because if it were Blaine, they would still be fast asleep.
