'It's real'

The words were still playing in his head,
words that he knew to be true, no matter how
much he wished that they weren't.

Sara, overdosed? When Bellick said those words,
he had wanted to kill him. When he kicked him,
he had wanted to keep on kicking until the smirk
was permanently off his ugly face, but he had
stopped himself. He wasn't going to stoop to
Bellick's level of violence.

He needed to talk to her.
He needed to hear Sara's voice...
Just for a minute.
He knew how dangerous it would be to
make the call, but he knew how dangerous it would be
to not make it.
If he didn't hear her voice..
if he didn't tell her how sorry he was...

He punched in her cell number, and resting his
forehead against the dirt covered wall, he waited.
As the phone rang, his thoughts raced with the message
he wanted to convey.
He knew he only had a few moments, and so much
to say to her. His thoughts were still racing when
she answered the phone.

"It's me", he said, his voice choked with emotion.
"What do you want"? he heard her say.
And praying she wouldn't hang up on him,
he replied, "I don't have time to talk.
There's every chance they're listening to
this call right now, but there is a lot
I want to say". And then, afraid that she might
hang up, he pleaded,

Sara, don't hang up". I don't want to
talk to you", she said.
"I heard about what happened to you",
he said with tears in his voice.
"And I want you to know how sorry I am for everything",
he added as he fought the tears. "Sorry isn't going
to do me any good with what I'm up against",
she replied angrily.

"Anyone with any ties to me or my
brother could be in danger", he said anxiously.
"I don't have any ties to you or your brother", she said.

"There is a way I can protect you Sara",
he said huskily. "It's already in your possession".
" What are you talking about", said Sara, confused.
"It was real Sara, you and me, it's real",
he said as a tear slid down his face...

Hanging up the phone, he prayed that
she would believe him...just once more...
