Disclaimer: I don't own NCIS or it's characters! (Would McGee be there instead of Kate If I did?) This Fic is set in Jen's office during" Hiatus part II", this is the conversation that we should of seen.

Authors Note: Even though I'm incredibly dedicated to the KIBBS camp I couldn't help but write this fic! Enjoy and review, review, review!

Jethro Gibbs swirled the amber liquid in his glass gazing into its frothing contents. He felt her eyes on him and there was no way on earth that he could meet her eyes. They were probably filled with tears, confusion, hurt. He could run through six miles of heavy undergrowth but the Marines had never taught him how to deal with this.

He heard her put her glass on the table. Years of frustration, anger, guilt and regret welled up and exploded causing a lump to rise in his throat. He swallowed it struggling to deal with emotions fighting to come to the surface.

"You're leaving? After one incident?" her voice was hoarse.

Gibbs shook his slowly. "It's not the first time Jen." His mind fled to a scene on a warehouse rooftop with a pretty brunette lying on the ground. Ari's face danced in the corner of his imagination. He tensed and clenched his jaw. Eyes filling with tears.

"Agent Todd…" began Jen.

"Kate" stressed Gibbs. "Shouldn't be dead, she wouldn't be dead if it wasn't for the FBI and your predecessor."

Jen opened her mouth but nothing came out, Gibbs stood up and walked towards the door.

"Did you… do you love her?" she asked with a slight tremor.

"She was a good person and a great agent but you and I both know that another woman was the last thing that I needed." Murmured Gibbs with a half smile.

"That's not what I asked Jethro." Replied Jen, her voice was husky and expectant. Gibbs paused before answering

"For a while I think I did."

Jen took a sharp intake of breath.

"Jethro I still wish…" she began again.

"The past's in the past Jen, let's leave it there," growled Gibbs warningly.

"Don't you think I know that Agent Gibbs?" retorted Jen icily. "You seem to have moved on from when I first met you."

"Hell Jenny don't," demanded Gibbs finally meeting her eyes. "Just because you're my boss doesn't mean I can't talk to you in private like I always did! I still care about you the same way I always have! But enough is enough! Nothing could convince me to stay here, not even you. Not after this, or Ari, or Kate or Shannon and Kelly! It's too much to drown in bourbon just so I can suck it up and come back to work the next day!" he insisted. "I can't Jen I just can't," his voice had quietened to a bare whisper, and for a moment he seemed to radiate the pain that he was feeling, it flooded the room. It left the air feeling dizzyingly heavy. He put his hand on the door handle.

Jen searched frantically for something to say, something to make him stop if not stay. She knew there was only one thing that could be said but she was afraid to expose herself.

"I love you Jethro!" she said, it was simply put with all the desperate honesty in the world to be heard within it.

"That's always good to know Jen," smiled Gibbs before opening the door and going to tell his team.

I wrote this ages ago but my dinosaur of a computer was so riddled with unknown viruses that I couldn't post it so let me know what you think!
