Sam Winchester was never blessed with a normal family. A normal life.
Once - when Dean was 4 they were just that - normal. Now they're family torn by pain, memories and hate.
Sam realized his life wasn't typical when his father forgot about his parent-teacher conference and instead came Dean.
The evidence of it kept palling up.
On a hunt Father gave orders...Dean strength and courage.
But it wasn't until he was 14 and got lost on his field trip with a hurt classmate and instead of calling the professor, or his father Sam called Dean. His first thought what to do...call Dean. Peter who was on the ground with a broken leg asked him why he called his brother instead of his father. The answer wasn't clear to Sam at that moment but it did when Dean - in record time - showed up, fixed the situation, got them to the rest of the class and just left.
Peter told him he wished he had a brother - a older brother - like that.
Sam gaped at the always arrogant class mate who became the first Dean fan.
Sam's vision of his 'hero' brother started to turn more and more hateful.
The older they became more and more people started seeing him as Dean Winchesters younger brother.
Not John's Winchesters younger son but Dean's younger brother.
On joined hunts with others like them or in school.
He was never picked in spite of his lanky height and geek aura...they respected his brother - even if Dean didn't go the same school - and instead of beating the shit out Sam the jocks looked out for him.
Instead of feeling happy Sam felt shame.
Anger.
At the age of 18 Sam got into Stanford.
He had his normal life.
He had his peace.
But as he stepped into his new dorm room, Sam realized something.
Dean raised him, Dean probably hated him now.
He was never going to see his big brother - his surrogate father - again.
At that moment he would trade anything to turn back the time...only to thank his brother for everything.
Thank him for all the giving up he made just so that Sam would have what he never had.
A family.
