As you sit by the fire, you shiver under your small blanket. You can't help but wonder why Thorin has been gone so long, and Gandalf smiles at you reassuringly from where he sits smoking his pipe.

A few minutes later, you hear footsteps, and glance up to see Thorin returning from scouting ahead with Kili. He catches your eye and smiles at you, before leaving his nephew and coming to crouch by you.

"You look cold."

You nod.

"Here." He stands and removes his blue coat, helping you to your feet and not giving you a chance to protest as he wraps it round you. You smile your thanks, and sit back down, enjoying the warmth of the coat and the softness of the fur. Somewhat to your surprise, Thorin sits at your feet, where the ground dips a little. He half turns to speak to you.

"My hair requires rebraiding. I'd be grateful if you would do it."

You nod your assent, and begin to remove the beads from his dark hair. Thorin knows he has caught you by surprise, and smiles before turning back to face the other way. You certainly are surprised; you know that dwarf courtship is private to the point of being secretive, and Thorin has never shown you these attentions when among others.

You slowly begin to braid his hair, feeling the eyes of the others on you, but you ignore them. Since Thorin's hair is not braided extensively, it does not take you long, and when you are done, he surprises you again by leaning back and resting his head in your lap. You bring your fingers up to his hair, combing them through it as he eventually dozes off.

The next thing you know, it is dawn, and the sun's fingers creep through the trees to caress your face. You hear music, and turn to your left to see Thorin sitting there, gently and expertly playing his harp. He smiles at you, a smile which you return, before closing your eyes to better enjoy the music.
