JJ and Beth had been dating for a couple years now and they
can't imagine living without each other. However, JJ gets called to serve
in Vietnam. Beth starts freaking out because she is convinced that JJ is
not coming back. JJ keeps telling her that he'll come back safe and sound.
Even though she believes JJ, Beth still has a feeling that he won't come
back home alive.
The day before he leaves, his family holds a big party for him. Everyone keeps saying, "JJ was such a nice boy," and "He doesn't know the risk he is taking going there." Beth overhears all of these comments people are making. After awhile, she becomes extremely frustrated and interrupts the party with a speech.
"I am aware of the risks and dangers JJ will encounter in Vietnam. I am proud of him for wanting to risk his life for his country. There should be more men like him in the world. He will survive Vietnam and come back as the great guy he is. All he needs is our prayers and support. No more negative comments please. Thank you."
After her speech, everyone thought that Beth was ignoring the facts. Vietnam is a horrible place, with bombs and vicious fighting killing hundreds of Americans every day. Anyone being shipped to Vietnam has a good chance of being injured or killed.
After the party, Beth couldn't shake the feeling that JJ wasn't coming back from Vietnam. As hard as she tries not to, Beth starts to believe the negative comments she heard at the party. Beth starts to freak out and tells JJ that he can't go away. JJ can't believe that Beth doesn't want him to follow his dreams. "Beth! What happened to us supporting each other's dreams?"
Beth can't believe that JJ is willing to risk his life and leave his whole family in order to fight in Vietnam. Beth and JJ have a huge fight and Beth decides to break off the engagement. Beth feels like if JJ doesn't want to stay around and be there for her and his family, then he is not the man she thought he was.
