"So, what did he say? Is it my fault?" Jim asked Pam nervously when she emerged from the elevator, tears already brewing behind her eyes.
"Yeah." She nodded, her lip quivering.
Jim was shocked. What could he possibly have said to make someone turn back on their commitment to love the mother of their children? Their life partner?
"He said that you...told him how much you love me...about how you feel when I walk in a room, and...about how you've never doubted for a second that I'm the woman you want to spend the rest of your life with...I guess he's never felt that with my mom, even at their best."
Jim's heart was still caught in his throat for Pam. God, why did bad things happen to good people?
"You okay?" He asked.
"Yeah," she nodded, but he didn't believe her for a second.
He was acutely aware of the cameras surrounding them, but to hell with them. Pam needed him. The tears were coming down now, and he wrapped his arms around her, making himself shorter so that his chin rested near her neck, and he ran a hand through her hair.
"Pam, I'm here come Hell or high water," he reminded her, running his thumb over her engagement ring.
Pam was too overcome with emotion to speak, and simply nodded, biting her lip before kissing him again. Just as they separated, the producer of the documentary, Jen, appeared.
"Hey, Pam, can we steal you for an interview?" She asked.
Jim moved in front of Pam. "I don't think that's really very-"
"No, Jim. It's fine." Pam said, her eyes still red around the edges.
"Pam, you don't have to do this," He told her.
Frankly, he was pissed that they'd even asked. She was clearly upset, for God's sake. The last thing she needed was to be interviewed about it. But Pam Beesly was nothing if not headstrong, and she followed Jen around a corner for her interview. God, he loved that woman, and he had meant everything he said to her father. He loved her to the ends of the earth, and every time she walked into a room he could swear it got a little brighter. She practically made him dizzy, he was so in love with her.
As Pam waited for the cameramen to do their focus and lighting tests, she found her mind wandering back to Jim. God, they were engaged and he still gave her butterflies. She'd loved him since day one, and she could almost laugh at how ridiculous she was for not acting on that sooner. But she had him now, and she always would.
"Okay, Pam. Whenever you're ready, just tell us a little bit about what's been going on for the past few days for you. "
Pam thought about this for a moment. What had happened to her over the past few days wasn't really mattered. So, she decided to only say the important part.
"When you're a kid, you assume your parents are soulmates," Pam explained, looking at Jim's vacant desk and smiling at the picture of the two of them he kept in a frame there. "My kids are gonna be right about that."
