Joel held Ellie tight in his arms and prayed one last time, "Lord, forgive the sins that I have committed. Please let me die, but let Ellie live. She needs to have a full life, Lord. Please..."

Joel opened his eyes, and he knew what he had to do. Joel willingly walked towards the clickers. Ellie didn't think anything of it, but Joel knew she would soon know. He just hopped she would stay back. Joel opened fire on the infected, and charged them. Ellie then understood, "NOOOO!"

Joel hit one in the face with the handle of his revolver, and pulled out his bowie-knife. He jabbed another in the throat with his blade, and was automatically bit by one in the neck. He didn't cry out, he just kept on fighting. Ellie started to run to Joel, but Tommy appeared and held her back. She fought her best, but it was no use, Tommy wouldn't let go.

As Joel went down, he said through his blood, "Get her out of here... I-I'm counting on yo-you Tommy. GO!" Ellie cried in protest, but she knew Joel was dead. As she looked back, she saw Joel pull out one of Bill's shrapnel bombs. He pulled the trigger.

Ellie and Tommy got around the corner just as the bomb went off. Shards of junk flew past them. Ellie ran towards the burnt, bloody corpses. She couldn't tell which one was Joel. She just sat there and cried until Tommy made it to her.

"Why... Why did he do this, Tommy!" Ellie whined. Tommy was silently crying himself. He looked down at Ellie and said, "To save you, Ellie. You were like a daughter to him.
