I Dreamt I Was A...
I dreamt I was a sub-human,
or some sort of mer-man
Plunged into a cerulean abyss
that scared me exceedingly.
Struggled when I shouldn't have.
Mouth puckered and eyes wide,
rising but not fast enough.
Panic seeped in.
tiny mallets struck upon metal,
octave upon octave,
higher and higher
it was barely perceptible.
A melodic but terrifying sound:
the celesta called my heart.
A frantic turn here,
a frenzied twist there,
glistening bubbles shot up to the surface,
yet darkness had not set in.
Light prevailed.
The current from a native nudged me,
a tail grazed my skin.
Turned to look,
a flurry of a tail wagged with a flourish,
a permanent smile displayed on its face.
Too crestfallen to smile back.
Tried to ascend once more,
the water level increased.
Escape was inevitable.
Then, slicing through the water
as if it was my natural home,
bright tints of objects alive and not passed me by.
Electric greens, hot pink, bright yellows,
and neon blues blurred into one.
The olivine kelp held in a trance,
the jungle of the sea.
A pearly beluga saluted me,
a pirouette—
a gallant gesture.
A grin tugged at my lips.
Maybe it wasn't so bad after all.
