Spice and Wolf
This appears to be a story of typical human arrogance. There is only one token faunus, and their portrayal is entirely inaccurate.
This is pure exploitation of a faunus. Walking around naked like that.
Holo
My initial impression that this is about class conflict and the marginalization of faunus and their contribution to society. Holo, the token faunus, escapes a broken economic arrangement on the basis of obsolesce due to changes in practices as enforced by an unseen corporate entity focused on maximizing production and not cycles of renewal. Further, Holo has been explicitly marginalized into a legend and ritual that has been warped to show irreverence as opposed to gratitude and respect even when under threat of institutionalized oppression. In fact, it would not surprise me that a policy of oppression of faunus is shown later my a central authority.
The other main character is a human trader, Kraft Lawrence. He is a experienced gentleman whom was blind to the affections of Chloe whom found him attractive as an older mentor. He totally freaked out as he discovered Holo. It's like he hadn't seen a faunus before! Talk about under and misrepresentation in film. I mean, really, faunus are everywhere! Anyways, through negotiation Kraft agrees to take Holo north to where she came from.
I do have some issues with the faunus portrayal. I mean, Holo was naked through most it, and only got clothes before she took them. Kraft didn't even think to offer her clothes, and said it was it best clothes that she took. Well, he wasn't wearing that dress, now was he? And in my experience with faunus, none of them howl. Some could, but it is just a sterotype and no one does it.
I am interested to see where this series takes us. There is potential here. I mean, Chloe is likely to pursue her long crush who left unexpectedly. I can imagine what she sees in an older, experienced man. One that is hardened by the road yet good looking. His rejection of Chloe and apparent disinterest in Holo might suggest that his interests are elsewhere, however. And come to think about it, he seemed really passionate about the dress Holo took. That could mean that he is...
As I said before. I am interested to see where this series takes me... er, us. Out of respect for my roommates, however, I might want to see if I can get a copy of the graphic novel as to not disturb their studying. Depending how this goes, I should probably keep it from Ruby. She still hasn't returned the last book she borrowed from me.
