For Anna - my beta and best friend!

A good life

Deputy Chief of Staff, Joshua Lyman drove back from his work at the White House that sunny october day knowing he had a great life. He loved his job no matter how demanding it could be on his physical and mental health at times. He could piss off Republicans and at the same time have that soothing feeling that what he did mattered. Whether it be gun control or 100,000 new teachers. When his President would be done with his 8 years in office, they'd have made a difference.

Even better than that, he could do all this with his best friend just an office away and some of the nicest people he'd met in professional politics. Not to mention the perfect assistant. Chauvinistic or not, when he used to sit over his books in college and everything seemed to be just a little too hard, he would dream about how, some day, he'd have an assistant who would take over the dreadful tasks such as research. And now she was there. Smart, funny and efficient.

Yet, he was looking forward to coming home that day - any day - to his house in Georgetown. To his beautiful wife and their little son. He wondered sometimes wether he could cope with the stress and the unearthly working hours if he didn`t have that safe haven to look forward to. Although he could only spent a couple of hours a day with his family it was a real home and there was nothing like the sound of their voices greeting him every night.

Honey, is that you?

It sure is, princess. Where are you?

Fixing dinner. Don't shout, Nicky is already sleeping.

She stepped out of the kitchen and, from behind, slipped her arms around his waist to hug him. When he turned around she smiled, reached with one arm around his neck and kissed him. Somehow each of their kisses still felt the same as that first wonderful kiss 5 years ago, when they started to go out.

Amy..

What?

Amy called.

What did she want?

I don't know. Something about a memo you wanted on your desk first thing tomorrow.

That's why she called?

I think she likes calling you at home, honey. I think she might have a crush on you.

You just say that because you still haven`t gotten over the fact that I didn't give you the job.

I could have done great things.

I am absolutely sure of that. But not as great as the things you're doing for me here.

She laughed and pulled him closer towards her, deepening the kiss.

Mrs. Lyman, are you trying to seduce me? Well, Mr. Lyman, what ever makes you think that?

She was now slowly pulling at his tie and slipping off his jacket.

What about dinner? I guess, dinner will have to wait.

The End
