I haven't had any inspiration for a while, but this popped into my head.

I think you can tell what mood I'm in from this little thing. It didn't take too long to write, either.

R&R?

And thanks to Green-Blooded for pointing out some little errors! :D

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

"Come to bed, Fiyero," the woman across the room said, her voice low in her throat. The young man sighed and took one last fleeting glance out of the window, smiling appreciatively at the sprawling emerald streets below him.

Emerald.

It had always been his favourite colour. It was a deep, rich, strong colour that he could envelop himself in forever. It was the colour of his Gale Force captain's uniform, the colour of the silk of his bed sheets. The colour of her skin.

But she wasn't here anymore. She had taken off on the wind's back like a great black bird, defying gravity, all by herself. She had left him to comfort her best friend, so that she could become the most feared young woman in Oz.

She had been the one to make him see sense.

She had made him pay attention and pull his act together.

And she had made him fall in love with her.

But she didn't care. In truth, she didn't even know how he felt about her. Her reckless passion had overtaken her life, and she hadn't hesitated to leave everything behind. Not that she had all that much to leave.

An ashamed family.

A world of people who could never accept her.

One good friend.

And him; there on the sidelines, so ready and willing to love her, if he'd only let her know. He couldn't blame her for taking off, really. Now, he had devoted his life to protecting her, under the pretence of hurting her. He trained his body ruthlessly, and led his men away from where she would be. He watched over her best friend, sharing her bed and her life; becoming engaged to her. The young woman, still a mere girl, could never compare to her. His fiancée was all soft curves, flaxen curls and feminine charms. She was passionate and strong, with hair blacker than night.

But she was never coming back. And it hurt him every second of every day, like an illness, slowly eating away at him. Sometimes, he wished he could just die, and get the pain over with.

But then she would come to mind, and he would push himself harder, further than he could ever have thought.

She was killing him and keeping him going all at once.

Fiyero rolled over in his sleep, pulling the blonde woman closer to his body. She nuzzled into his arms and smiled, entirely content.

He abruptly shattered her contentment with a murmur. Just one word was enough to shatter her heart.

"Elphaba…"

A sigh rose from his chest and a loving smile graced his lips.

Glinda Upland pretended not to hear.
