Beautiful Bugs

If someone were to ask Shino what the most beautiful thing in the world was, he'd probably show them a bug. Because bugs were the most beautiful thing in the world to Shino. They were small and intelligent and had the most beautiful markings ever. They built intricate living quarters and had a wonderful society structure. Bugs were strong and brave and they fought for Shino because he asked them to. Bugs were beautiful.

Because they were the exact opposite of Kiba.

Shino's bugs were quiet and respectful and intelligent and they thought things out while Kiba didn't. He was loud and noisy and rude and vulgar. He had no respect for people older or stronger than he did. He was over-confident, selfish, and bratty. He wore a thick coat with gaudy black fur lining and he couldn't go more than five minutes without putting someone down in some way. He fought for Shino even when Shino told him not to. Kiba was emotional and annoying and everything Shino thought he didn't like.

Because Kiba could get under his skin in ways his bugs never could. Kiba could walk into a room and immediately change the atmosphere with a smile or a loud greeting. He could talk to Shino, carry on honest-to-god conversations and actually get a response. He could train and train and train and still have the energy tell Shino he didn't need his help getting home when it was obvious he did. Kiba could touch Shino and make his body tingle. He could just look at him and Shino would never feel so helpless in all of his life.

And Kiba let Shino touch him, too. Let Shino feel every part of his body with inexperienced hands and lips and teeth. Kiba let Shino do things to him that Shino was certain he wouldn't want to do with anyone else. Kiba let him in, in deeper than his bugs were, and let him stay. He let him kiss him and rub him and in return Shino let Kiba cuddle up close when all the kissing and rubbing was through. He let Kiba play with his hair, kiss his forehead and tell him in a teasing voice that it really wasn't all that bad for the first time but practice makes perfect.

So yes, to Shino, bugs were the most beautiful thing in the world. But he still liked Kiba more.
