"Mom, why did we have to come here?" I whined for about the fiftieth time since we arrived in Mexico. My mother and I were walking down the streets of Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

My mom sighed and responded for about the fiftieth time, "For the last time, Miranda, we are visiting your family. You used to love to come here and play with your cousins!"

"Yeah, used to, is the key word." I mumbled. It was true, I did used to love to come to the beaches here and play in the sand and ocean with my cousins. This year, however, the three cousins my age couldn't come because, get this, they were graduating eighth grade and wanted to be with their friends. Just what I should be doing! Carlos was here, but he was two years older then me. Plus he had all his friends here and he didn't want his little cousin tagging along.

"Mom, why did we-" I began.

My mom sharply turned and grabbed my wrist. "Miranda!" My mother interrupted. "If I hear those words one more time I'll make sure you'll have NO fun while you're here."

My mother stopped to look into a shop and I plopped down in a chair outside the shop. I don't think I'll have any fun with or without my moms help. This will be a summer of boredom unless I do something to change that, fast.

Later that night I stood at the sink in my aunt and uncles kitchen. I was the lucky one to get stuck with the job of washing dishes after an all- out Mexican feast. After this I get to baby-sit the four little terrors also known as my cousins.

So while I'm here, playing maid. Lizzie and Gordo are graduating and then having the time of their lives in Rome. While I'm here. How depressing is that? Plus the fact that I look like a whale. I ate an entire chimichanga and half of an enchilada.

I washed the last soapy dish and put it in the dishwasher. After grabbing a handful of chips from the bag on the counter I walked down the hall and into the family room where Carlos was watching the kids until I finished with the dishes.

As soon as he saw me he jumped up from the chair he was sitting in and started toward the door.

"Later, Miranda. I'll be back around 11:30." He called over his shoulder.

I sighed and sat down on the chair he had just been in. Carlos was gone. My other cousins, aunts and uncles and even my parents were all out. And here I am.

I proceeded to watch the monsters destroy the living room as I wallowed in my own self pity.
