Neverending nights

The taste in my mouth was bitter. That s probably because of that strange thing that Hadji made for dinner.

Wait. What s that? A shadow lurking in the alley.

Just as I was preparing myself to follow it, Johnny came along.

«Hey Jess! Wait for me!»

Great. That was all I needed. I go out on my own, first time since I don t remember, try to get some action without him or Hadji somewhere near. And he has to follow me.

Not that I would usually mind….but this is different. This is very very different. He s taking up my valuable time while I should be somewhere. I m not planing to spend my whole night like this.

O God! Maybe he s hittin on me. I really don t want that. will this ever end? I have a job to do. On my own.

For the very first time on my own, no backup, just me. I rely in myself. Nobody else. If I fail….I simply pay the price of death. It s simple like that. I can do it. I know I can.

I can lie about being sleepy, then I can sneak out of the house. No one will notice. I can disable the alarm system for three minutes without anybody knowing about it. That s all I need.

«What s the matter Jess?»

«O….nogthing much, just sleepy, that s all.»

«We can go home if you want to.»

«Sure. That would be great.»

He didn t even notice the gun I had hidden in my coat. So typical for him. He s not a fool, he watches for details, he can take care of himself even if doesn t want to realise it. But he can never see that what is right in front of him. He doesn t see it or pretends not to see it. It s all the same, especially to me.

We get home….»good night»….bla..bla..bla…etc.

I slip outside, unnoticed, covered by the neverending night. The bitter taste in my mouth still….

I have a job to do.
