Disclaimer: Nope, I don't own Captain Jack Sparrow, much as I would love to. Just playing!

Author's Notes: Okay, so for most PotC fans, this is probably getting old. Countless people have written their interpretations of Jack's thoughts at the end of DMC. So if you're reading this, I thank you profusely and hope against hope that you'll drop me a review. At least this one's short, right? And if you haven't seen DMC, I'll say it once: SPOILERS AHOY!

Ahem. That said, I hope you enjoy!

Breaking Free

--------------------

What have I got to lose? The Black Pearl is about to be wrecked, and the remnants of its crew are fleeing to some new freedom, Elizabeth with them. But the Pearl has always been, will always be my freedom.

Dying with it makes sense, really.

However, our irrevocable bond, captain and ship, is not forged from iron, but mutual liberation. I'm not about stand by passively, defeated, as it sinks, when our real bond is much stronger than these metal links. It's time to make my last stand. Captain Jack Sparrow is a rebel, not a prisoner.

Savvy?

…And maybe I am a bit curious. Elizabeth bound me, but how would it feel to choose the right thing? Would a "good man" confront the Kraken instead of jumping overboard to chase down that lifeboat, even if he were not chained? Perhaps I should find out.

So I break free.

A/N: I didn't want to talk too much at the beginning, but I should also add that I made this drabble by picking out and forging together pieces of a ficlet that's a bit longer, one of the parts of my two-shot Freedom and Curiosity. So if anyone reads that, you'll know why parts sound the same. Now, enough of me! What did you think? -cough-pleasereview-cough-
