A/N: I've edited quite a bit, I think. it's much better now, hopefully you all like it as much or more! Read and review!
Goten jumped off the golden Nimbus that his brother let him borrow, he had been playing with Trunks at his house all day. He was 5 and his best friend was 6, they played all sorts of games, and of course they trained together. Although, Goten was home schooled and had a lot of free time, while Trunks had to go to a public school, then do homework, there wasn't a lot of time for play. Today was Saturday though, so that had all day, but since Trunks had such a tight schedule, Vegeta wouldn't let him go without training, so of course Goten joined in. The boy, loving to fight quite naturally like his father and Vegeta allowed it since Trunks could have a fair sparring partner, they were both very evenly matched. Also, Vegeta enjoyed watching his son beat the snot out of Goku's son, or at least that's what he said. Although Vegeta acted as if he didn't care for Goten, he knew that he was the only 'fatherly figure' for the boy to look up to, which was why he tolerated him so well. Vegeta was his father in many ways, and only felt more so like his father when Goten spent the night.
He walked into the house and saw his mother cooking dinner as usual, she was cutting up vegetables as Goten came in, he walked by her and reached his hand onto the cutting board to grab some of the food, only to be smacked in the hand by his mother, "ow…" He complained. Chichi not wasting any time before scolding him, "Don't do that when someone is cooking, you could get hurt! Besides, you can hold off until dinner young man." She said convinced as she continued chopping the vegetables. Goten pouted and looked at his hand as if in serious pain and wanting her to feel bad, however, it didn't work as cleverly as he first thought, so he decided to drop it altogether. He rested his hands on the black belt around his waist and looked up at his mom, "Mommy… do I have a daddy…?" He paused there and saw his mother stop chopping, he furrowed his brows and picked up his hands as he began to explain, what he thought was needed, " 'Cause Trunks said that to be born you need a daddy and a mommy, that's true, right? So… where is he..?" He wondered, raising a brow up at his mom, a blank expression, not realizing what exactly he was bringing up.
Chichi hadn't continued chopping and remained still as she stared out the window in front of the counter, she gulped and was trying to keep herself from tearing up, but a tear was visible by the young boy rolling down her face. "mommy?" He wondered as he lifted his hand and tried reaching up as if to wipe off the tear, "Are you okay mommy? It's okay, I don't need a daddy! Really, I don't mind just having you!" He told her, pulling at her sleeve and begging for her to be okay, she set down the knife and knelt down to hug her sweet little boy tightly against her chest.
"Oh hun.. it's not that.." She told him, smiling as the small tears continued, Goten wrapped his arms back around her and clenched the back of her shirt.
"Why are you crying mommy…?"
"You have father but.. he's… he's…" She sniffed as the tears were coming faster, she had thought she was done mourning for so long already, but now it all seemed to be coming back. She missed him so much, and her youngest child was so much like him, she had almost forgotten he was gone, but now his full memory was coming back to her. Goten should know his father was a true hero though, she gulped and tried desperately to tell.
"Mommy, it's okay..! you don't have to tell me!" The boy suddenly begged, his own eyes getting teary from the worry of his mother he was experiencing.
She shook her head, pulling away for a moment to wipe her eyes and smile, to hopefully show she was okay, "Hun.. it's about time you know this.. you're right… it's just that-"
Goten let go of her suddenly, even pushing her away, "No mommy! You don't have to tell me if it makes you sad! If you want me to know… then… I'll ask someone else!" He told her before running off before she could force it out through her tears. Chichi smiled at her courageous little boy with pride, he was so much like his father and he would never be able to fully understand it.
Goten went up to his room, his eyes on his feet as he tried to figure out in his head why she would be crying by such an innocent question. His brows furrowed in concern and bewilderment. Did he really want to know what happened, he wasn't so sure. He came into his shared room, going over to his smaller bed with the rocket ship blanket and sat down, his eyes on his knees and his hands holding the blanket at his sides in deep thought. Gohan even went unnoticed as he continued his studying at his desk.
Gohan looked over at his brothers entrance and noticed the state he was in, he turned around in his chair and looked to Goten, "Hey little guy, what's up? Did you get in a fight with Trunks again?" he wondered with a laugh, the two got in a fight about toys so often, it just seemed funny now.
Goten looked up at his brother and frowned, "No… I was asking mommy a question and she just got all sad all of a sudden…" He said, getting up and approaching his brother, whom he trusted and talked to a lot when it came to just about anything. Gohan smiled at him and lifted him up, placing him on his lap, he looked at him with an arm wrapped around him, "What did you ask?" Gohan wondered.
Goten let out a big sigh before tell the quick story, to hopefully get across his view so that Gohan doesn't get sad like his mom got, his hands up, swinging back and forth while making pointless gestures, "When I was at Trunks' house, we trained for a little bit, and during the break, I told trunks that I wish I had a daddy like his and he told me that you can't be born unless you have a daddy and a mommy, so that means I must have one, and so when I got home I told mommy that Trunks said you needed a mommy and a daddy to be born, and I asked her if I had a daddy, then she got sad and then I got sad and then she said I did have a daddy and then she tried to tell me where he was, but she got more sad, so then I left and now I'm here and explaining it all to you." He spoke quickly and gave more information than he really needed. He breathed heavily after his long explanation. He looked up at his brother and saw a similar blank expression that his mom had, for a moment he thought his brother would start crying too. However, his brother was stronger than that and kept himself from doing so.
Gohan sighed and took a deep breath, "You wanna know what happened to dad…?" He wondered, Goten looked up at him questioning as if unsure himself, Gohan took that as a yes and decided to try and explain. Goten was still a child so he tried to put it gently, "Well.. you heard about the fight with cell right?" He wondered.
Goten smiled and lifted a fist, "Yeah, that was the one where you kicked butt, right!?" He said with pride, "You were all heroic and stuff, right!" He shouted and started punching at invisible people around him, Gohan laughed and caught on of the small fists that went flying, pushing it back down.
The older brother sighed and got back to the story, "Well.. there were some facts we kept from you, because you were too young… but now… you're old enough. In that fight… a lot happened, a horrible thing happened. It was our dad that was the real hero, Goten." Goten stared in awe at his brother, and his brother stared into his dark brown eyes getting lost in the moment that happened years ago as Goten envisioned it to the best of his understanding, Gohan smiled pridefully of their father as he told the story, "When we thought the battle was over, Cell came back and his body expanded. He was going to blow up the planet and all of us with him. Dad could only think of one idea, he used his teleportation to get cell away from the planet. He sacrificed himself for all of us, Goten. He died a hero." Gohan smiled with pride and remained silent as he paid the quick respect for his brave father, when he managed shake out of it he looked at Goten and saw him doing the very thing that he had shaken.
"My dad's a hero…" He smiled, then looked to Gohan with a more questioning look, "..but… why couldn't you just wish him back with the dragonballs?" He wondered, furrowing his brows and questionings everyone's mindset for not doing that.
"It's more complicated than that Goten." He informed, rubbing a fist in his knuckle-headed brothers hair, "He had already been wished back once before, but…" Gohan stopped and dropped his hand at his side, remembering the pain he went through when he heard Goku's response to the dragon, "even so, we did try and get him back… he refused to come back."
"What!? Why!? Why would he do such a thing!? Doesn't he know his family needs him!?" Goten demanded, growing angry with the father he was just proud of a moment ago.
"Yes, he knows that… but… he was worried that if he comes back, more people will come threatening the Earth because of him." Gohan lowered his head at the memory of how destroyed and angry he was when he first found out about his father's refusal to come back, but he understood now, "He didn't want to see more people getting hurt because of him."
Goten got up off his brothers lap, "I think I get it now…. thanks Gohan… that helped." He smiled at his brother before going back downstairs to give his mother a much deserved hug for being so strong and taking care of him and his brother all alone and not letting the death of her husband keep her down so much. Plus, Goten couldn't wait to call Trunks and tell about his father and how heroic he was in the cell games.
