Leader
They all considered him the leader. And why not? He was the most likely candidate, after all. They obeyed his every command, followed his lead. All he had to do was wave his hand and they would fall silent. He'd basically formed this study group. In every way, he deserved the title. He was popular, cool, good looking, everything. He was envied left, right, and centre. He could get any girl he wanted, run the reputation of everyone and anyone whom he chose into the ground. Then there was Abed…
Abed was quiet. Abed was observant. Abed was like his polar opposite in every way. Abed kept to himself, he wasn't popular, he was… he was Abed… But his eyes swept over them all, reading and watching. His words, when he chose to make them so, could be filled with insight and wisdom beyond what one of that age should have even been able to hope to utter.
Abed was calm, Abed was level headed. Even when the rest of them were going every which way imaginable, he was staying still, never reacting, never sinking to such a level. You couldn't read Abed, you couldn't predict him. On more than one occasion he had saved them from chaos. Abed had caught the dice before the timelines warped farther. He assured and calmed them. He'd saved their friendships multiple times, like with Annie and Shirley. Abed had taught him lessons that stayed with him more than some of his idols' ideologies had ever done. Abed had done all of that and more. Like when they'd been trying to set him up with a girl they thought had liked him, he'd taught them all a valuable lesson with only a few words. Or when Troy was trying to prove himself a better athlete and Abed was willing to let him win. He'd saved them all when they were gaming against Pierce's brother, and when they'd all been towed away in the space simulator. It was Abed, Abed, always Abed. He did all of this for everyone… Everyone but himself.
Jeff sometimes wondered. What was the definition of leader? Who really deserved that great title and honor? He wanted to say him, but part of him knew… all of him knew… that he was wrong. And thinking it over now, he wondered. Was he still the leader? Had he ever truly been?
