Drabble – 'Birth'day
The King was a mess. He was pacing around, talking to himself and driving everyone around him crazy. Of course no one was going to tell him that, except maybe one person, but he was too busy and had his hands full.
The stable was crowded but Alexander kept clearing a path as he made another circle. People stepped back for him but then filled the space in quickly after he had vacated the spot. All eyes were on the stable in front of them. Alexander would stop in front of it on each trip and look at how things were progressing and then go back to his pacing.
Hephaestion knew there would be more than one arrival soon. The problem was both seem to want to come out first. Hephaestion hoped this didn't mean they would be like their father and grandfather. Both of these two had little patience, they were stubborn and always had to be first at everything. He wasn't too sure the world was ready for two more of Alexander and his beloved Buchephalas.
"Alexander!"
"What? Is it time?" Alexander asked excitedly.
"Soon, but please stop pacing and relax, everything is fine."
"Are you sure? It sure doesn't look fine. This is taking way too long and…"
"ALEXANDER!"
Finally the King quit talking and stood looking down at Hephaestion. Making sure he had Alexander's complete attention, Hephaestion gave him a very stern look and said very slowly, " If you don't stop now, I am going to send you to your rooms."
Alexander giggled nervously, "You wouldn't dare."
"Try me."
Buchephalas groaned and snorted behind Alexander, stomping his giant hoofs on the ground.
"That goes for you too. Now both of you behave!"
Alexander looked back at his black horse and the horse stared back.
"He wouldn't dare but maybe we should try to relax and be more patient." The horse nodded.
A few more pushes and groans from momma dissolved all of the newfound peace and quiet. The pacing began again in earnest and Buchephalas started doing the same around his stale.
One of the little ones finally won the battle and made his appearance into the world. He was as black as his father and already a big boy. Alexander stopped and looked proudly at his new grandson.
"He is beautiful, just like his father. Oh, what a little sweetheart you are." He began saying to the newborn in baby talk. Hephaestion just shook his head as he watched the second on come through the same channel. The same black hair covered this ones body too but this one had less equipment on her.
"One of each." He said as he looked at Alexander but Alexander was too busy blinking away the tears. He pulled Buchephalas out of his stale, scattering people in every direction.
"Look! Just look what you have here. Aren't they amazing? You should be so proud."
Hephaestion decided he was going to be very busy when Alexander's children arrived.
