Chapter One
"They," Marcus snarled, "hang out here." He jabbed a finger at the crude map.
"Yes, and?" Ben yawned, bored with Marcus's typical planning.
"So," Marcus replied haughtily. "We can ambush them."
Ben stretched out on the couch lazily. "Tonight?" There was a twinkle in his eye; he was trying to irritate Marcus.
It worked. Marcus exploded on Ben. "Yes tonight you lug! We need to show them who is in charge! They strut around this town like they own the place! They aren't! Right Russell?"
Russ was lost in a daydream about a girl named Rosa. Marcus started shaking him.
"Russ! Russ snap out of it," he shouted.
Russ started, dazed. "Huh? What are you shouting about?"
Marcus glowered at him for a moment, then let go of his shoulders and repeated himself slowly. "Do you believe we need to show those stupid Grape County Gang members who is in charge of this town?"
Russ shrugged. "What about Rosa?" he asked.
Marcus glared at him. "Russ, get over her. She's one of them." He stood up abruptly. "That settles it." He picked a shirt off the floor and wiggled into it. He grabbed their guns off the floor and checked them for ammo. "Get up."
Warily, Russ and Ben stood.
"Get in the car. Those Grapes are going to get crushed."
Julia stared at the mark on her wrist in awe. It amazed her. The purple stain blended into her skin, and looked almost unreal. Her cousin, Tim, had never managed to make the markers look that way. She was a Grape County Gang girl now. Tim had been pushing her towards this since they were young. It was almost a namesake.
She headed out the door to the lot where the rest of the members usually spent their time.
Russ stepped out of the car with Marcus and Ben. The two of them were itching for a fight, but he felt dragged along for the ride. He didn't really want to be here. He was stuck in this gang because of his father's debts to the leaders. He had repaid them, but there was no way out. Death was his only possible escape.
His thoughts were broken by the peal of gunfire. Russ's eyes were drawn by compulsion to the bloody body on the ground them up to the murderous eyes of the Grapes. The fight had begun.
Julia walked into a gory scene. Her cousins were fighting and bystanders lay bleeding on the ground. Tim was no where in sight.
"Oof!" Someone slammed into her and knocked her down before running off.
"Oh gosh, are you okay?" A boy ran over and helped her up.
"Um, yeah. I think." Julia moved to get her gun from her waistband to join the fight and gasped in pain. "Oh, no. Ouch!"
"Come on," the boy said. "Let's get away from here. It's dangerous." He took her hand and led her away. "I'm Russ. Who are you?"
"Julia," she replied.
"You're beautiful." Russ was stunned. He had no idea why he had said that. He glanced at Julia. She seemed bewildered as well.
"Are you okay?" he turned his attention to her wrist. She was cradling it, like it was badly hurt.
Julia glanced at her wrist. She slowly removed her hand, wincing at the pain. It uncovered the grapevine.
"I think I'm alright. Can you take a look?" she held her hand out to him.
Russ smiled and looked down. His expression changed from confusion, to understanding to horror. He whispered. "Oh god."
