Scully stood alone in the dark alley. Her heart ached as she listened to the cold voices coming over her headset. They didn't understand. They would never understand. The "enemy" they were after this night was just an agent gone bad to them, a man whose hard work now amounted to nothing in their eyes and who they'd always considered to be on the brink even before he'd been bitten. But to Scully, he was the best person she'd ever known and the dearest friend and best partner she'd ever have.
"He's coming your way." Scully planted her heeled feet apart and held her gun at the ready. A massive, dark shape filled the entrance of the alley, and Scully prepared herself for the worst as she choked down her emotions. She had to do this, not for the people she and her partner worked for or to save her own self but for Mulder.
The beast howled and charged. Scully stood her ground. When the Werewolf's gnashing, saliva-dripping jowls loomed at her, she closed her eyes and squeezed the trigger of her gun. She fired three times, and each gunshot shook her world as she imagined it going into her best friend.
Scully's eyes snapped open as the ground beneath her feet shook. The Werewolf lay on the pavement, gasping for its last breath and gazing up at her through Mulder's shocked, pain-filled eyes. The fur and fangs disappeared, leaving Mulder naked, bleeding, and dying before her very eyes. Scully dropped to her skirted knees and held his head in her hands and lap. She cried as she ran her fingers through his thick, brown hair.
Mulder struggled to speak. "Don't . . . " he told her pleadingly. " . . . cry . . . You . . . saved . . . me . . . I . . . " His body jumped. Blood spit from his mouth, and his eyes rolled back into his head as he took with him whatever words of wisdom he had been about to leave his partner.
Sobs raked Scully's body as she bent over the only man she could have ever loved.
