Kim's eyes flickered as she downed the shot Voight gave her, smiling despite herself at his comment that the city was better off with Pena dead. Damn right we're better off, she thought to herself. And Nicole would be better off if the assholes that hurt her actually had to pay for what they had done. But no, they got a freakin' slap on the wrist.
"Didn't get a chance to ask you, but how you holding up?" he queried. Didn't want to embarrass her in front of the others, he thought. After all, this was a delicate situation and it wasn't anyone else's business. But he still wanted to make sure she was holding up all right, which was why he had asked the homicide detective, Scott Hart, to pair up with her.
"Gotta admit, little pissed off. Just seems like there's no justice. I mean, after what those monsters did to Nicole…" her comment trailed off and she shrugged.
"I can't even imagine what that must feel like-having to deal with that," he stated.
"That why you got me the babysitter?" she queried. Don't know why he thought it was necessary but glad he didn't make it obvious, she mused.
"You knew?"
"Lindsay warned me that you might pull the protective card, yeah." At this, Voight nodded. Shoulda known, he thought. The two had gotten pretty close over the years and it made sense for his surrogate daughter would warn her. "Thanks for being discreet."
"Of course." Voight poured them both another shot and Kim knocked it back. She knew that she was damn lucky that she wasn't getting raked over the coals like she deserved and she wasn't going to press that luck. Then, she stood up and headed out. "Burgess." She stopped.
"Sarge?"
"I'm here…if you need me. And so are the Boys."
"Yeah, I know. I just…I might need some time."
"Take all you need. I'll be here." Kim nodded and walked out.
