If there's one thing I miss about Alaska, it's the cold first day of school.

It's not that I like the cold, but it was so much better to freeze than it is to melt in the heat of the day. Still, it's better to be too hot in a place where no one knows you than a tundra with the everlasting presence of bullies.

Then again, this is my first year of high school. Some of the kids in Alaska used to talk about what happens in high school, specifically the shoving of freshmen into lockers by upper classmen. I hope that doesn't happen to me.

Still, I would at least know people in Alaska.

"You nervous Hazel?" Nico asked as the two of us walked towards the campus.

"I mean… yeah." I said, turning to face him. "No one knows me, what if I embarrass myself?"

The thought of being laughed at because of a stupid mistake scares me even more than anyone finding out about my mother's… "job".

Nico chuckled slightly, "If you can embarrass yourself enough to have anyone care, I'd be impressed. Seriously, no one cares about freshmen."

"Really?" I asked.

"Well, yeah." Nico said, "Hades, I'm a sophomore and I'm still not recognized."

For some reason, Nico's words made me feel a little better about myself. So, I decided to walk the rest of the way to the steps of the school with my head held high and a new found pip in my step.

And walk right into another student. We both tumbled to the ground and I landed flat on my back.

As I laid down, the familiar sounds of ridicule and laughter filled my ears. So much for not being recognized I thought.

Would it be too much to ask to have whatever god exists to kill me now?

The student I walked into stood up and my heart sank. He was ripped and tanned and tall and I just knocked him over.

Forget the gods, this boy was going to kill me.

I closed my eyes as he looked down at me and waited for him to start screaming.

One second, two seconds, three seconds.

"Are you alright?"

I opened one eye to see an outstretched hand in front of me. I then looked at the student again.

And I was petrified.

He then waved his hand in front of my face. "Hello? Is there anyone there?"

"Uh… thanks…" I said as I grabbed his hand. "I mean yes… I mean sorry, I mean…" I said, flustered.

Real smooth Hazel

The boy chuckled. "It's alright." He helped get on my feet and said "You must be new around here."

I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.

"Well, let me be the first person to say welcome to Jupiter High, I'm Frank and you are?"

"Hazel, it's nice to meet you Frank." I replied, a bit too quickly.

"The pleasure's mine, Hazel." Frank said. "Come on, I'll show you around."

"Thank you." I said as I followed Frank to the school.

Maybe school here isn't going to be as bad as I thought.
