You deserve this more than anyone.
And she did. She had been the one to insist on saving your friends while you and Max had been willing to let them die. She had been the one to come back when the rest of you were content to save yourselves from the asteroid.
She had come back for you. You'd messed up, you hadn't looked where you were going, and you hadn't thought to free yourself with magic. She could've run right through that door and she would've won fairly. She hadn't been obligated to help you, there was no rule, written or unwritten, that said she had to come back for you, but she'd done it anyway.
Even the little bit of power you possessed had been enough to corrupt you, how could you have handled being a full Wizard? The competition had brought out the absolute worst in you and Max, it had probably been designed to, but Alex hadn't given in. She'd done the right thing even when it wasn't the smart thing.
You'd been absolutely awful to her, even though you'd known she hadn't done anything wrong, and you hadn't even apologized. You had wanted to keep your powers so much that you had been ready to let two of your best friends get eaten, and you'd been angry at her for insisting on saving them. You'd been a complete jerk these last few days, no, this last year, but she'd helped you anyway. It didn't make any sense.
It' didn't make sense that she'd always been able to think of the perfect spell when it mattered, even thought she'd almost never cracked open a spell book. It didn't make sense that she could be so selfish in everyday life, but be willing to give up everything when someone needed her. Nothing she did ever made sense, she didn't make sense. But then, neither did magic, so it kind of fit.
You got it. You finally got what it was that made her so different, made her deserving. She didn't work for things; she didn't follow the rules, or think before she acted, but her heart was always in the right place. She could be selfish, manipulative and deceitful, but not when it mattered, not when someone needed her.
So you decided to do the right thing instead of the smart thing. You decided to listen to your heart instead of your brain and your greed and your ego, and you gave up the power. You didn't think about the rewards or obligations or how good it would look, you just did it because it was the right thing and you loved her.
And then you were a full wizard. You passed your test and had the powers to prove it, and it finally made sense, even if there was no logic in it. You'd gotten it because you'd given it up.
You felt bad for Max, but then not really, because magic had never been as important to him as it was to the two of you. It had always been something fun to play with, not a part of who he was. He had a natural talent for business, and you knew he would be fine.
Everything would be fine, and if it wasn't, you'd deal with it together.
Because it's you and I. How can we not?
