Lights

"There were lights outside last night, guys."

Light. It was morning already? Rolling out of bed, she walked—more like stumbled—over to the window, not sparing a glance to the clock on her wall. It read 3:20am.

"No, really! I see them every night, outside my window!"

Pulling the curtain aside, she tried to focus eyes, hazy with sleep, on the light source that had disturbed her rather peaceful sleep. The sky was a sheet of darkness.

"They came back last night."

Lights bathed her already pale skin. It was not the sun like she had initially thought. It certainly wasn't just one light. There were more.

"Last night, they got out. I think they're friendly."

There was a pause; a moment where her brain tried its hardest to make sense of the lights outside of her window, currently shining so brightly, it hurt to stare straight at them. Turning her head towards the wall, she looked at the clock. 3:23am.

"They were in my room last night."

Her father was the first thing to cross her mind, but the word died on her lips the moment she tried to say it out loud. Silly her, her father was out with that new girlfriend of his. He was never home. He was not going to protect her this time.

"They're not friendly, it hurt."

Then, there was movement. One of the lights hovered closer to her house, over the roof. The light was so much brighter from up close.

"I don't want to go to my room."

Run. Even when there were noises coming from her roof, resonating through the empty halls of her house, even when they neared her bedroom door, she did not move. She did not run. She did not move. She could not move.

"Can I stay with you tonight?"

The door creaked ominously as it opened, her back turned to it as her eyes were glued to the remaining lights outside of her window. Her chest felt tight and her breaths were shallow, and the shifting behind her was getting louder. Closer.

"Can you stay with me tonight?"

Tears made her vision blurry. Falling freely down her cheeks when something pierced her back and entered her spine, a liquid heat mixing with the fluid already there. Cat had been right; it hurt.

"I'm so scared, Jade."

A cold, wet appendage —a hand?— settled on her shoulder as whatever had pierced her skin—a needle?— was pulled back and out of her. Another needle-like object was pressed to her neck and, before convulsions made her go unconscious, Jade had one fleeting, scared thought.

They do exist.

Author's Note: A late night project for a friend... also, proof that I will try to put Cade in every imaginable scenario. And I wanted to try a different format.

I love anything related to extraterrestrial life, or aliens. So, it was only a matter of time, too.

Enjoy!~
