Chapter 1- Falling
Rating-PG-13
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters from ER.
A/N: Please read and review! This is an idea I got after watching Back in the World. Thoughts are in italics.
He had never noticed how busy the ER is before. He looked around the room and down the hallways. That's when he saw her. Her head was in her hands while she sat on the bench. He ran to her but slowed as he got closer. She was crying. Of course she's crying. When he was standing beside her for quite some time he finally spoke, "Mom?"
It was barely above a whisper but the woman known as mom to him heard him. She turned to face him. The tears kept rolling down her face. "How is he?" He finally got the nerve to ask.
"I…I don't know Alex. They haven't told me anything."
"Oh." The frightened boy sat down on the bench next to his mother. Together they watched people run in and out of the trauma room. With each swing of the doors reality hit them harder.
After some time the doors were opened for the last time and a gurney was rushed out. They both leaped to their feet hoping to catch a glimpse of the man that had a large presence in their lies. Her colleges, now her friends, had their hands wrapped around the internal organs of the man she loves. They were trying to stop blood loss. She knew that but now that she was on the other side of the line she was scared out of her mind.
Susan followed behind the gurney but she stopped when she saw Sam and Alex. Now came the hard part of her job. But it's even harder to tell someone you know something they don't want to hear. She took a deep breath. "Sam are you sure you want Alex to hear this?"
Alex looked at his mother pleading with his eyes for her to let him stay. She didn't even look at him. She just nodded her head yes.
"Luka came in with a piece of metal in his back and three in his right leg. We removed them but he'll have to have surgery to repair the damage. Sam there's something you show know. He flat lined for about a minute. We got his heart beating again but we had to put a tube down his throat." Sam started to sway. Susan reached out and grabbed the clearly upset woman's elbow. She helped the young woman sit back down on the bench.
"When can we see him?" The boy Susan had forgotten was there asked. She turned her attention from Sam to Alex.
"Probably after the surgery is over. I'm going to take you up to the surgery waiting room." The woman in the white coat lead the boy and his mother to the elevator and then to the waiting room. She wanted to stay but her pager told her otherwise.
After a few moments of silence, besides the sobs that found their way out of her throat, she finally spoke breaking all silence between them. "If I had just driven you to school this wouldn't have happened. But he wanted a chance to fix things with you."
But the man being operated on didn't get that chance because Alex didn't give it to him.
A/N- That was horrible. Oh well. Just another fic I can put in my bad pile. But I'd love to hear your comments. Even if their bad. So please make me happy. Review. Who knows if you like I might even continue. I have another chapter written.
