Jan is a disaster waiting to happen. His brand of energy blows through SCRTC on a daily basis, cannoning into doors and bouncing off walls, as noisy as an approaching hurricane and just as devastating. He's so desperately enthusiastic to see and learn and try, and - at the same time - so rambunctious and undisciplined, that, despite her admiration and respect for the director, Ran wonders if Miki-san did the right thing in bringing him back with her; whether Master Shafu is doing the right thing in trying to train him.
Then she starts to notice that when she fights against Jan, she's faster. She feels lighter on her feet, as if there's a forgotten spark dancing inside her that she's only just rediscovered. And that, when she watches Retsu practice against him, Retsu's skills are honed in the same way, becoming so much a part of him that they seem suddenly effortless in their grace. When she realizes what it is, she wants to laugh out loud with the simplicity, at how wise Shafu has been all this time. Jan's not only the 'body' of the team, but the part of all of them that shouts and plays and sings. He's the inexhaustible fire inside them that changes everything they do from a battle to a wonder and a triumph: the fire known as joy.
Jan isn't particular about who he loves, probably because there was nobody around when he was growing up in his forest to tell him to be. When he's happy, he accosts Retsu for hugs as often and in the same way that he does Ran, and he doesn't distinguish between how he kisses them when he starts to do that too. He asks what's wrong with loving Ran and Retsu together, at the same time, when they both make him feel wakiwaki and nikoniko, and, for once, even Retsu can't think of anything to say in response. When Retsu finally drops his mouth onto hers and then Jan entwines himself with them, nuzzling and nipping at their skin, until they can't figure out any more where one of them leaves off and the next one starts, Ran is quite sure she's never felt more wakiwaki or more blissfully complete before in her entire life.
Jan might be a disaster, or he might be the most perfect thing that could have happened to them.
