Rolling over to greet my newly-wed husband Four, I whispered, "Good morning, Tobias." But before I could reach my arm over to wake him up, I realized something. Something that chilled me down to the bone.
Tobias was gone.
I rushed down the stairs; apparently, I wasn't the first to see Four was gone. Breakfast was filled with commotion. While I tried to look for a familiar face, I thought, maybe it was me, I caused Four to go. Soon after I found a seat with Christina, I wondered why she was acting so weird. Before I could ask, she said in a very calm voice, "Where is Four? I heard that he ran away."
I didn't know what got into me, but out of nowhere, I screamed, "How are you so calm, and when did you get the news? He just wasn't there when I woke up! Christina, tell me, where is he?" I tried to calm down as she and the whole room stared at me. When my face wasn't so red, I whispered, "Christina, how did you know? Were you there when it happened?" Christina then walked quickly out of the room.
The rest of the people occupying the breakfast area were silent. Nobody spoke, and it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. When breakfast came to an end, I was walking up the stairs to my room, when I saw Christina in there; she was looking through my room. It seemed like she was looking for something on Four's side of the room. Then, I walked slowly up two more stairs, and the stair creeked. Christina turned around, she saw I was there.
As she pulled something out of her pocket, she then whispered, "I'm sorry."
I turned around knowing I caused this, but not exactly knowing why it happened. 2 seconds later I heard a loud noise which sounded like a gunshot, I turned back around and she was gone. Not dead, but gone. I didn't know where she had gone, but the shock of almost having my best friend commit suicide was definitely messing with my head.
I didn't know what to do with myself; I didn't know if anyone else heard it. I knew I needed to leave. I packed up all my things, then I sprinted into the woods; while sprinting I looked through the corner of my eye, and then it hit me: everyone knew that I caused something to happen to an innocent person.
Or did they? Had they heard the gunshot ring out from my room? Or did they still think I was Tris Prior, the innocent little Abnegation transfer from the Choosing Ceremony? Why, why did I do it? Why did I have to kill Will, and then get Christina, who had forgiven me already, hassled again? My anger and frustration got to me as I collapsed against a tree and closed my eyes.
I awoke and I wasn't in the woods anymore. Instead, I was in a house, but I didn't recognize this house. As I wondered where on Earth I was, a lady came into the room and shouted, "Tris is awake!"
I attempted to stand, but I was denied by the pain in my knee. The lady said, "Take it slow. Part of the bark on the tree got lodged into your knee, so we tried to remove the bark. We got most of it out, but it got infected very badly."
I said to her, "How long have I been here?"
She said, "About two weeks; we pronounced you dead. We thought you were gone."
I said back to her, "How did you find me? I was in the woods behind the Erudite housing. Nowhere really accessible by the general public."
She responded with, "We were going to check up in the Erudite region, and out of nowhere, we heard someone screaming for help. We ran as fast as possible over to you and we brought you back here."
I said, "Who was with me? Do you know their name, or anything about them?"
She answered, "His name was Caleb Prior, and he told me that he had a very strong bond with you, but he didn't say anything else."
I started quickly, "He's my brother, I need to find him. Did he come here to check on me?"
She didn't say anything.
I needed to find him, and quickly.
