Some Computer Program
"Hey Stella, hi Bloom," Timmy squeaked, jogging a bit to catch up to the fairies.
"Hi, Timmy," the girls chorused. "How are you?"
"Oh, I'm good, thanks. I had to stop in at the Apple store to get a new motherboard for my Macbook, but otherwise..." He caught the girls' disinterested faces and hastened to add, "I don't suppose Tecna is with you?"
Bloom and Stella liked Timmy well enough but he was worse than Tecna for techno-babble, and they were eager to be off on their shopping expedition. Stella jerked her thumb over her shoulder. She and Bloom had left Tecna only moments ago, poring over her laptop at an outdoor cafe table.
"You're in luck, Timster," Stella smiled. "She's jacking Starbucks' wifi for...some computer program."
Tecna looked up when she heard her name, waved Timmy over, and rolled her eyes.
The orange-haired specialist sat down. "What's up, Tec?" he asked concernedly as the fairy pounded on her keyboard.
"'Some' computer program," she fumed. "'Some computer program,' indeed! Do you know, I could tell you the name and label of the band Musa is practicing with right now. I know which plant Flora is trekking across the Black Mud Swamp for, and why. I know the name and historical significance of the dance Layla is learning at the studio across town. And I know which boutique Stella and Brandon are going to."
Poor Timmy looked lost. "That's, um, nice, Tec."
"And you you know why I know all of that?"
"No..."
"Because I listen!" the girl exploded, her laptop utterly forgotten. "But you ask them what I am doing and they don't even care! All they can tell you is I've been working on 'some computer program.' It's...it's criminal! I'm designing it for them, for us – for the Winx Club! This isn't just 'some' computer program! This is a custom upgrade for my Digisketch that emits a high-frequency sonar signal that—"
"That can render a three-dimensional holographic image of the space on the opposite side of a wall up to a meter thick," Timmy finished excitedly, quickly scanning her computer screen. "You did this yourself, Tec? It's fantastic! I'm sure there will be bugs, there always are with prototypes, but this is some of the most innovative programming I've ever seen."
"Oh—well, yes, thank you," she spluttered, completely wrong-footed by his unabashed enthusiasm. She was incredibly flattered. "It's also infused with a spell of mine. In addition to the sonar, it emits magical energy that seeks out spells, charms, magical barriers, even traps if they aren't too well concealed, and depicts their locations on the hologram," Tecna said proudly.
"It's brilliant. Really, I'm...I'm totally in awe. Honestly, if your friends – if everyone, really – knew what you were capable of, they would never leave you alone to work on 'some computer program' again. I know I won't."
"What do you mean, Timmy?" the fairy asked, her expression puzzled.
"If you're writing any more new programs, I want to be there with you. To see what you're going to come up with. To help you, if you need it. To make sure 'some computer program' isn't about to bring the entire galaxy to its knees," he grinned playfully.
Tecna couldn't stop the smile, or the blush that crept up her cheeks. "You're sweet, Timmy," she said, embarrassed by her own cheesiness.
"I wouldn't say it if it wasn't true," he muttered, blushing as well.
His hand found hers under the table and their fingers laced – and Tecna didn't even mind how hard it was to program one-handed.
The End.
