When he dreams, he dreams of her. When he thinks, he thinks of her. The same girl, the same beautiful blond, over and over and over. Two sentences, and his heart belongs to someone who would never belong with him. He watches her dance, high heels planted in the glass of one of the tables in that expensive bar. He doesn't belong there; he knows that and so does everybody else. Humphreys don't mix well with the elite of the elite. A mistake, just like his invitation to the party.

He notices other guys watching her, smiling in a way that should get them incarcerated and shouting what they class as encouragement. 'Yeah, baby, put it down!' they scream, as she sways her hips recklessly, one hand in her hair, the other holding a half empty bottle of something strong. Despite all of that, she is beautiful, and he is revolted by the fact the other men in the room can't concentrate on what was above her neckline. He's the one focusing on her strong eyes, big, and round, and a shade of blue that is so extraordinary, they seem like precious stones hidden behind the shadows of her long lashes. He's the one noticing her nose, long and slim, but not straight, and he adores the imperfection. Irrelevant for someone so perfect. He's the one focusing on her luscious lips, stretched in a unconscious smile that was contagious. He's proud that the teenage perversion gene has skipped him, and he can focus on her truly best features, but it saddens him to know that the guys that are realistically available to her will never give her a chance to experience someone calling her 'beautiful', not 'hot'. She deserved someone like Dan Humphrey, but her world was filled with the likes of Chuck Bass.

Someone pulls her off the table and kisses her, and she laughs loudly when he whispers something in her ear. The sight hurts him, but the sound of her laugh makes it worthwhile. Innocent and youthful, like that of a four year old. Now Dan understands that underneath the wild, mature facade hides the beautiful soul of someone better, and he chooses to see that Serena, not who she appeared to be. The boy pulls her by her hand toward the back door, his smile causing Dan's fists to ache for contact with his face. He tries not to think of the reasons behind their trip outside, but he does anyway, and he just wants to cry. Impulse moves his legs, and then his brain decides to leave. He has no reason to be here in the first place. He closes his eyes as he walks, blocking out the people, and their expensive faces, the status and power oozing from their eyes. He thinks of how damaging the world she, the girl he just fell in love with, lives in is, and he just hopes that one day, she can escape from the madness, even if only for a minute.

He walks home that night, hurt and angry, but fate puts them together again. He sees them at the back of some dark alley, him forcing himself onto her, her crying softly into his shoulder. He doesn't think, he just stops, clenches his fist and saves her. The captain of the basketball team. Typical. He carries her home, her knight in shining armour. In his eyes, he's just caring for her. Her head hurts as he helps her stand outside the door of her apartment. 'You saved me tonight. Thank you so much.' Two sentences, and his heart belongs to someone who would never belong with him. The door opens and she disappears behind it. Goodbye. He'll never see her again.
