"Son wake up!" Duane's eyes opened just enough to acknowledge his fathers demands.
"Everything is ok I just wanted to let you know I'm headed out to gather more wood for the fire."
"I'll be fine dad just go!" He grabbed his blanket and pulled it over his head in angst. When will he treat me more like a teenager? Ever since the outbreak Duane and his father were all each other had but he wanted his space as well.
Morgan grinned and walked towards the door with his rifle slung across his shoulder. He didn't mind Duane's attitude, knowing all he had been through at such an early age. His mom was killed by a walker in the first days of the outbreak. They had both been dealing with the death of Jenny in their own way.
He cautiously walked out to the barn where they kept their wood supply. "Fuck." He muttered. There was barely enough wood for an hour let alone for the remainder of the night. Not wanting to wake Duane again he decided to just scrounge the wood line for a fallen branch or two.
After finding an ample amount of wood he began his track back to the house. As he rounded the barn Morgan noticed a walker was busting through one of the windows in their home.
"Duane! Duane!" He screamed as he sprinted towards the house.
The shattering of the glass and screams of the walker was more than enough to wake Duane from his sleep.
"Mom is that you?" The flickering of the candle on the coffee table illuminated Jenny's face just enough for him to recognize her.
Jenny had now forced her way through the opening of the window, and began stumbling towards Duane with evil piercing though her dead eyes. Duane could only lay there, it was as if he had become paralyzed. The mere sight of his dead zombified mom had literally put him in a trance.
"Duane run! Get the hell out of that house!" Morgan screamed as loud as he could as he finally reached the front door. He burst through the door with the hope that Duane had heard his cries.
As he made it to his son he saw the walker already ripping flesh and cracking the bones of Duane. Without hesitation, he took the knife he kept laced to his belt and stabbed the walker right though the brain. Blood splattered on his face like rain drops.
The tears rolled down his face as he pulled the walker off Duane. "Jenny? No God please!" He cried out as he confirmed the walker to be Jenny. He sat down while resting against the blood-stained wall and pulled his family close knowing it would be their last time together.
