If the city doesn't sleep, then crime doesn't sleep. If crime doesn't sleep, neither does New York's finest. Jamie Reagan drove an NYPD patrol car down the brightly lit streets, along with his partner, Eddie Janko, keeping a careful eye out.
"Geez, Reagan, if you're going to sign us up for the midnight shift, the least you could do is let me drive," Eddie complained.
"No way, you can barely drive in daylight," Jamie teased with a good-natured smile.
"Funny," Eddie said as she stifled a yawn.
"It was, actually. How long since you've slept?" Jamie looked her in the eyes as they stopped at a red light.
"Would you believe me if I said, within the last 24 hours?" Eddie tried Jamie.
"Hell no," Jamie deadpanned.
"Fine, I pulled an all-nighter with some high school friends last night. Hadn't seen them in years," Eddie yawned again.
"I doubt I even want to know how that went," Jamie smiled at the thought of what crazy characters his partner befriended in her teens.
"Hey! I went great, until we started talking about our jobs," Eddie trailed off.
"Oh, what happened?" Jamie internally slapped himself for his insensitive curiosity.
"Now that, you don't want to know. But it did open my eyes a little," Eddie began.
"To what?"
"Well, if just an average officer can get so much crap just for wearing a badge, I can't believe what it's like to wear the Reagan name," Eddie looked sympathetically at Jamie.
'Maybe she'll find out someday,' Jamie thought to himself before responding, "I wouldn't have it any other way, honestly."
Eddie opened her mouth to respond but was met only with a yawn.
"Hey, I have an idea,' Jamie began, 'I'll clock us out for meal, and you can take a nap."
Eddie smiled, "You're not bad, Reagan."
Jamie smiled back and radioed to central.
Eddie soon found herself resting her head on Jamie's shoulder, eyes closed. "You're comfy," she declared.
"Can't say I haven't gotten that before," Jamie responded.
The two sat in content silence, Eddie for sure sleeping. Jamie took the opportunity to rest his own chin on Eddie's head, and managed not to wake her.
