She was gone. Rory was gone—forever. Nothing he could do could change this. He had tried to shield her from the problems he had, but in the end, it was his fault. He had brought her to his apartment, intent on showing her that he was doing great. Then ghosts from his past materialized and demanded the money he had borrowed.
He didn't have the enormous sum they demanded, but Rory did. "I have the money." Rory told them. "We want it from him." one told her. "Not from you."
"It's his money!" Rory claimed. "Really? We know who you are—you're a Gilmore—of course you have money. But it's not his." the second said.
"Rory, get away." he said. She instead took a step toward the two guys and the first pulled out a pistol and fired. Rory crumpled instantly. "What did you do?" the second demanded of the first. "She's a Gilmore, doofus! A Gilmore—if we get caught, then we'll be worse than only in jail!" The two left and he was alone with a gasping Rory. "Rory, I'm so sorry." he whispered, tears coming to his eyes. "It was my….fault." Rory gasped out. "You told me to get away from them."
"No. I never should have borrowed money from them. I won't even try to come up with an excuse for it. I should have been a man and borrowed money from the bank or your grandparents or something."
"Don't be sorry." Rory whispered. "But do me one favor—go catch those guys."
"I can't leave you—where's your cell phone?"
"Calling 911 will—" Rory gasped out, "—do no good. It's too late."
"Rory, don't talk like that."
"I love you." Rory closed her eyes and breathed her last, and the seeping blood stopped pulsing from her shirt. "Oh, God!" he cried out to Whoever might hear him from heaven. "No! Rory!"
He cried over her still form for almost an hour. Then he located her phone and called the police. He gave a description of the two guys, the car they were probably driving, and where they might be headed. The police thanked him and said they would send an ambulance for Rory's body.
The police had trouble finding the two guys, but they were eventually caught and they were both given a life sentence. He knew that he had fulfilled Rory's last wish, and that consoled him a bit, but not much. And then, he cried the hardest he had ever cried in his life. He cried like he had never before.
