Everybody Keeps Leaving Me

Myka couldn't breathe. Pete might as well have just shot her, it would have hurt less. It wasn't him looking so lost and sad that hurt so much. Yeah, that twisted her insides into knots, but those four words alone almost broke her. It was all she could do to keep it from showing.

Everybody keeps leaving me.

Four simple words, but strung together in that order, with that look, told her more about Pete than anything she had found out about him in all their time working together. She knew he wasn't really asking about her leaving; hell, he didn't even remember her.

Everybody keeps leaving me.

It didn't keep the question she now knew Pete wanted the answer to from circling around in her mind, over and over though. Why did you leave me? Did he really think it was his fault? Myka thought she was clear in her letter; it wasn't his fault, not at all. It wasn't anyone's fault but her own. She was the one who put everyone and everything in danger. It was her fault, not his.

Everybody keeps leaving me.

But apparently Pete didn't think so. It took everything she had to not cry. She was supposed to be there for him, always there to watch his back, keep him from touching things and getting in trouble like he always does. She thought she was protecting him, protecting everyone connected to the warehouse and beyond.

Everybody keeps leaving me.

She was going to fix this. She was going to get her Pete back, no matter what it took. Then, she would apologize with everything she had for up and leaving like that without even saying goodbye, and pray to any and every deity that would listen that he would forgive her.
