Counting the distance

Sam loved thunder storms. She loved nothing more than to sit by her fireplace, a mug of hot chocolate heating her hands and watching for the flashes of lightning that usually accompanied the low rumbling of the thunder.

She remembered when she was little, her Mum used to tell her to count how long it took for the next rumble to come and that that would tell her how far away it was.

Thinking back, she realised that thunder wasn't actually a thing that could be a certain distance away, it was just a noise really, but she still counted.

Tonight, however, Sam was not alone. She had her hot chocolate, her fire and a blanket draped across her lap as she sat on the floor in front of the roaring flames, but she also had someone sitting with her, holding her close.

As the thunder rumbled, Sam relaxed into Jack's arms, snuggling against his chest.

"20 Miles" Jack stated.

Sam looked at him. "Hmm?"

"The thunder is 20 miles away." Jack stated, and kissed her on the head.

Sam turned around so she was facing him. "You count too?" She couldn't help but grin.

Turning back around to face the fire again, settling back into position and sipping at her hot chocolate, and with the next thunder crash and flash of lightning, she began to count, out loud this time.

"1, 2, 3..."
