Chapter One – Changes

It was cold when he came home that morning – tired, worn-out, incredibly exhausted. It was dark out so Jacob assumed it was probably around two something in the morning. His dad was either sleeping or with Charlie. Or at Sue's. He never kept track of where his dad went anymore after becoming Alpha.

Padding quietly into the house, Jacob made a beeline for the couch ( since it was closest and he was tired as shit ), flopping down carelessly with his legs draped over the side like a pair of long socks. The clock on the wall ticked and he allowed the silent air of the house to fill his brain as he drifted between sleep and waking up again.

The bonfire from last night flashed through his mind: Paul running his mouth and Brady going out of control. God, he could be such an asshole. Collin had been the only calm one the whole time. Kind of. That kid was really pushin` it a little. But at least he didn't have to Alpha order Collin into staying away from home till he could get his anger in check.

Brady on the other hand...'That kid is gonna be hell'.

But he and Sam had expected it for a while now - the adding of two more wolves, after the Cullen freaks had 'guests' over their house a couple months back. It had been before the whole fiasco with Bella and him started. To say Sam had been pissed was an understatement; he had been fucking angry. And he was always very calm, even when he had been approached about the sharing of the Alpha position.

That had been hilarious after all was said and done since he and Sam managed to resolve the tension between them and actually began being brother's again. But maybe that was why they could share the position: they understood, they agreed, they compromised. They made decisions together and had no trouble communicating. While he was the rightful Alpha, being a direct descendent, Sam had been the first to phase in over two centuries. That had been his right as Alpha – the reason that he accepted Sam as his equal.

Even if they tended to get pissed at each other to the point of wanting to rip each others throats out.

He chuckled at that specific thought, a flashback of him and Sam tearing through his father's rowboats near the garage. That had been annoying as a fuck. Especially when it ended in a tie ( He won, he totally won ) But that just meant that they were both really dominant wolves. They all were. Each and every member of the pack was an Alpha, in a sense. He just chained them down and let them know who's boss – even if they didn't fucking like it.

Especially Paul, god especially Paul. He was probably the biggest asshole ever who spent majority of his time drinking his life away or sleeping around with half of La Push ( Fork's too ). And Jared was no different – best friends did everything together, right?

Yeah, right. He remembered that one blond he met a few months back that he managed to get Embry in on. Wasn't exactly a night he'd like to remember. The bitch screeched like a dying goat and her snatch smelled like stink tuna fish. No offense to her but five seconds down there and he wanted to get the deed done and get gone. The only good thing that came outta that night was Embry finally losing his V-card.

The pack gave him hell for it but they were proud he lost it – finally. Even Seth wasn't a virgin and he was the youngest besides Collin and Brady.

Of course that high slowly died and it was no wonder half the pack slept around and got high a lot. Their enhanced abilities came with a few draw backs, even if women looked at him far more than they did before. The fact that he was now too big to fit onto his own bed or any of his clothes ( hence, the cut offs ) sucked ass sometimes.

Being a shifter was tough shit.

But fucking hell – two more wolves added to the pack? That made eight, not counting himself. His dad told him they had the biggest pack in Quileute history.

But of all things good, what a pain in the ass. Collin had taken the whole "your a wolf now and you can't leave the Reservation" speech pretty well. Brady, on the other hand, didn't. He kept getting angry and angry the more Sam's words sank into his head and the minute Paul opened his mouth, that was it. It was like a domino action: Brady phased first who hit Paul who hit Jared causing Sam to get involved causing him to get involved as well.

Spirits, help him.

'With the pack getting bigger, we'll need a new place to stay. Hell, the whole damn pack already live at Sam's cabin.' Jacob ran a calloused hand over his hard face as sleep was beginning to farther and farther away. It had only been a few minutes at best, maybe half an hour since he arrived home and he couldn't seem to find sleep easily this time. Too much on his mind, perhaps.

Maybe later on he'd have a talk with Sam later about expanding the cabin, since he owned his own construction business on the Rez. That, and his own Garage that he ran with Quil and Embry. Probably the only cash any of them could generate on the Rez nowadays

Happy place Black, happy place.

His eyelid's opened and closed again as he laid his large forearm across his forehead, trying to erase all thoughts from his mind in order to get at least two more hours of sleep.

A few hours later, when the spots of early morning light drifted through the living room windows, Jacob woke in a cold sweat. He was sweating profusely with his breath shallow and his heart beating a mile a minute.

He swallowed a hard lump stuck in his throat, using a nearby cloth on the coffee table to wipe the sweat from his brow. The clock on the nearby wall read eight-forty-five, one hour before he had to relive Quil and Brady of Patrol and join Paul till two in the evening.

Yay.

Jacob sighed, leaning back against the sofa with his eyes plastered to the ceiling, staring at nothing in particular but letting his mind drift once again to sort the thoughts running through his mind.

Somewhere at the back of his head, his wolf was pacing. He felt restless all of a sudden - not angry but just...restless. The animal inside him kept growling, snarling at the human side of him, as if it was waiting for something to happen – or someone, maybe. 'Control. Just take control.' Maybe it was just an after effect of the Alpha gene? He'd been feeling it all week long though, especially from last night at the bonfire. It was lucky that he could hide his thoughts from the pack – seeing as how being Alpha meant that his thoughts were less penetrable than the others.

He'd been doing that a lot lately, it seemed. Pacing around, always in deep thought, forgetting things, getting angry for no reason. In fact, if Jacob thought hard enough, he remembered a night where Sam slipped up in thoughts when he phased in for patrol; he snapped for no reason at all but Jake was used to Sam's brooding ass by now.

Still. Made a guy think a little. 'It's probably nothing...'

He shook his head, his thoughts drifting off to his father and Charlie, then Bella, in retrospect. Ever since the blood-suckers just up and left, Bella had never been the same. He tried to be there for her but her depression was wasted on the leech who left her. And he was tired of helping someone who couldn't help themselves first.

Suppose that was when he realized he never really loved Bella like he thought he did. He loved, sure, but only as a friend and perhaps as a sister. But she wouldn't even talk to him – let alone anyone else. So he cut ties and never looked back. The pack never asked but he was sure they knew. Of course they knew; years ago he was the love-sick puppy who ran away because he couldn't take Bella's rejection and the leeches smug grin when she did it.

Fuck. He wasn't going back to sleep now, so he might as well just relive Quil and thing two of duty already. Standing, Jacob moved across the living room and towards his bedroom to piss and pull on a clean set of cut offs, brushing his teeth while he was at it. His dad's room was quiet still so he figured he'd definitely been at Charlie's last night. Good thing too since he definitely would have sat him down in the kitchen and asked him what was up. Can't get past dad, apparently.

Bella.

Damn it, why was he thinking of Bella now? Of all the days and months he hadn't seen her, he has to think about her now. Ugh.

Choosing Edward over him made her position clear to him: Isabella Swan was dead in his eyes. It hurt, at first, to admit that. And it took everything in him just to not be angry and channel that anger into something pleasant. He remembered in the past, before he phased, that he had been madly in love with Bella.

The pack liked to call it the 'Bella train of love'. Well, it was really just Embry and Quil who called it that since he'd been hell-bent on ignoring Sam, Paul and Jared. Then, Embry too when he phased and left. But things got better after he phased himself, joining his brothers with Quil following soon-after. A year passed after that and when Seth phased which made Leah phase after Harry died by that red-headed leech, things went to shit.

His dad had said there had never been a female wolf in the pack till now. And Leah wasn't exactly good company, even if she was a female. She was more of a bitch than anything else. Paul's words, not his. Things got better when she imprinted; some Angela Webber girl who went to Bella's school. It really allowed her to move on from Sam and the anger she felt towards him. Who knew the preachers daughter was into girls?

But it had some draw backs. Now the pack knew they each had a chance to imprint. It was supposed to be rare, the elders said. Old Quil explained it like it was magic, like finding 'the one' was the best shit ever. And maybe it was, but maybe it wasn't.

'Shit. I sound so pathetic.'

He felt restless now. His dragged a callous palm over his face and quickly made his way out the door.

As soon as his bare feet hit the porch, the cold morning air immediately attacked his heated, russet skin. Being a wolf had it's ups and downs. Over time, he seemed to learn to accept his wolf just a bit more. And the subtle change seemed to reflect amongst the whole pack.

For once in his life, Jacob felt right with himself and his duty as the Alpha. Despite the off sensation at the back of his mind.

He reached the edge of the forest in seconds, pulling his cut-offs off and tying them around his ankle; Sue was getting tired of seeing all their clothes being ripped to shreds. The least he could do was take them off before he phased. Her words, not his.

'Unlike Paul. Can't believe I put him with me for patrols...'

Before Jacob knew it, his chest was heaving heavily and his back hunched as his muscles contorted and stretched. Snarls bounded and his upper lip twitched, the wolf slowly rising against his naked flesh before it broke free and he erupted onto all-fours in a pile of massive reddish-brown fur. His eyes flicked from black-brown to yellow for the barest of moments, eye-sight enhancing as the scents in the surrounding forest invaded his nose. The air around him shook and soon the familiar feel of the earth met his senses.

Two howls pierced the air; Quil and Brady.

He would never get tired of it – the phasing.

Now he could think, let his thoughts roam freely while he ran aimlessly.

The forest around him breezed through his vision as he ran at top speed, his paws pounding the ground as the wind rushed through his reddish-brown fur. The trees blurred as the early morning sky began to clear and grow light with color, splotches of lavender and baby blue flickering across his visage. Birds popped out from their nests, chirping high in the trees as the dark clouds collecting above soon turned a very light grayish white.

A nice day in Forks was rare. Maybe it was gonna be sunny today?

'Highly unlikely dude. Weather man says there's a fifty percent chance of rain and a two percent chance of it being sunny.' Quil's voice entered his thoughts and immediately Jacob could see him making his way towards him and away from First Beach. It's gonna storm dude.

'Hopefully. I wanna go cliff diving. Maybe push Paul's ass off while I'm at it.' That was Brady, definitely. Damn it, the kid had to lay off the cockiness and bad-assery. He could take on Paul but the kid wouldn't last even five minutes.

'I can! Have you seen my pecs lately? Give me a few years and I swear, Jake, I can take you both on.'

Jacob rolled his dark eyes, shaking his mass of fur at the thought of that ever happening. 'As if. Maybe when I roll over and play dead.' All he got in return was a wolfish grin and Brady sprinted after Quil, both of them heading in his direction, snapping their mounds at one another in the process. Jacob shook his head at their banter, too deep in thought to be bothered by them.

Lifting his snout up, he sniffed the air lightly and noticed he was near the Swan residence.

Multiple whines immediately erupted in his head. Seriously? He didn't plan on coming by, it was an accident, honest.

'Dude! It's almost Nine in the morning! Give. Me. A. Break.' Quil's ears flopped back against his skull irritably as he hung his head, completely dejected. He seemed to have passed Sam's cabin with Brady trailing a little ways behind him. The kid looked tired. Dead tired.

'No shit, Sherlock. I stayed up all night having two Alpha's breath down my damn neck. And one over-grown idiot who wouldn't stop singing Sesame street. Wouldn't you be shit-ass tired?' Jacob chose to ignore Brady at the moment – he wasn't in the mood for the kid's shit right now. And don't get him started on Quil, god if he had to listen to one more line of Sesa –

'Elmo's the shit, dude! Don't hate on him!' Came Quil's come-back.

'Okay, this 'kid' shit has got to stop, and now,' Brady interjected, growling in that little 'puppy' voice of his. I'm not a pup!

'Shut it, pup. No one's talking to you. But seriously, Jake, don't start the leech-lover fest again. I can't stand that chick,' came Paul's smart-alack reply. When the hell did he phase in?

'Paul's been phased in since we started patrol, Jake. Didn't you know that? Even I could smell him...'

Jacob groaned at the thought of Paul hearing his inner-monologue. Just when he thought he'd get some peace and quiet. Some time to think, for once.

'What's wrong man? You okay?'

'I'm fine, just got a lot on my mind right now. I'll take over your shift Quil, go home and rest. Brady, don't say anything and just go back to Sam's.' Jacob jumped over a steep hill connected to a large tree trunk as he slowly trekked near the Fork's border; technically, it was still within Quileute lands, so he had the right to patrol around the area.

Brady phased out before he seriously went crazy from lack of sleep and too much 'bonding time' with the Elmo-idiot. Food was calling him right now.

'Oh god, dude. I am so outta here. Seriously.' Quil rolled his dark eyes, his ears flattening against his skull as he shook his head and phased out. To say it was getting old was an understatement: Jake had to get off the 'Bella train of love' before he crashed and burned.

Jacob nearly growled at that last thought. How many fucking times did he have to keep reminding everyone that he didn't love Bella anymore?! It was seriously pissing him off to no end.

'Whatever, Black'

'Up yours, Lahote.'

Paul just chuckled and snorted before making a run near south by the Forks and Rez border. Now it was just him and his lame Alpha.

'Great. Happy time with the stalker.' Paul said with a hint of annoyance hidden in his deep voice.

'I'm not stalking Bella. I just happened to be in the area.' Honestly, he had! Why did everyone still think he was hung over Bella? He didn't love her anymore, not one bit. The 'Bella train of love' has gone and left the fucking station. He just...he honestly felt like he needed to be here.

Paul just rolled his own dark eyes at that. 'Whatever you say, baby Alpha'

He was gonna ignore that last part.

Shaking his massive head, Jacob lifted his eyes up and let them rove over the faded white paint of the Swan house. Immediately so, his snout sniffed the air and an onslaught of scents invaded his nostrils.

The first was familiar, smelling of sugar and bleach. That was definitely the bloodsuckers scent; it was almost a year old, almost faded into the background of the flowers that surrounded the old house. Even after all this time the scent was still nasty.

Somewhere in his head, Paul agreed. 'Fucking leeches.'

The other scents were all natural however, since he had been to Bella's house long enough to tell which scents were normal and which scents, weren't. Bella's scent could be smelt upstairs, still very fresh like newly opened paint. She always seemed to smell too much of Edward for him to really sense her, but he always knew where she was.

The lights around the front of the house just turned off, leaving the house in an early morning glow. Though the sky was growing lighter as the day was beginning, Jacob could still hide himself within the shadows of the forest. In the distance he could see Paul resting somewhere near the Forks border, about a mile off from where he was.

'Don't worry, Jakey, I won't interrupt your little "me time"'

'Shut it, Paul.' Jacob rolled his chocolate eyes at Paul's sarcasm. He was an ass. Period.

Hiding behind a large bush, he lifted his head as the sound of a car rumbling down the road met his sensitive hearing. It was very distant, probably still a few blocks down from the Swan house, but he could hear the roar of the engine through the hood as clear as day.

Paul suddenly lifted his silver head, ears twitching and eyes narrowing. 'That's a Jeep Wrangler.'

Jacob closed the sounds around him, narrowing his own eyes as the dark blue Jeep slowed to a stop in front of Bella's house.

Fuck. He knew that Jeep. He knew who owned it because he saw it almost everyday. The worn tires and faded paint of Sam's Wrangler never faded from his memory. Hell, he fixed that damn Jeep so many times it'd be hard for him to not recognize it.

But what the hell was Sam doing at the Bella's house?

'Probably to pick up some chick at Port Angeles. I overheard him talking on the phone with Billy last nig –'

Paul's words died on his ears as he emitted a low growl, silencing him immediately. His dark eyes watched Sam step out of the Jeep, his own eyes snapping to the treeline where he stood and to the person that suddenly stepped out from the passenger side.

Sam's large frame blocked his line of vision, but he paced a little to the left, where a spot of sunlight shot through an open canopy.

'Jake!'

Embry was shouting in his head suddenly, running towards him with Paul hot on his heels. They seemed close but Jacob shut them out of his head, instead shifting his focus onto the figure that emerged from Sam's Jeep.

He saw a beaten yellow backpack followed by a long, slender arm that had dainty little fingers. It looked like they had been painted a sky blue, the faded color still visible to his sharp eyes.

God, he felt something stir within him, an emotion of some kind or maybe just adrenaline pumping through his veins. His chest began to tighten, like someone was about to squeeze his heart till it burst from beneath his fur.

Jacob continued to move more into the light, ignoring his pack-mates shouts in his head as the wind blew and a pleasant scent drifted his way.

Fuck, who the hell was that?

He took in long, deep lungfuls of air, trying to breath in more of the scent and hopefully see who the hell owned it. Lifting his snout up again, the scent suddenly invaded his sensitive nose and his eyes nearly rolled to the back of his head.

Vanilla and peonies, with a hint of cinnamon. There was something else, another scent he couldn't place but it tickled his nose in the most delicate way. It was like smelling a bunch of flowers but not knowing what it was or what it looked like. And he had to know.

Jacob shook his head, letting his dark eyes rove over the tiny patch of grass to the petite, little Asian that stood with a hand on Sam's chest. It seemed like she was pushing him away but her hands lingered just a bit too long on Sam's chest that he might have thought otherwise. Even from a distance, he could see the light blush spread clear across her pale face and he marveled at the rosy hue collected upon her muted cheeks.

God, she was so beautiful. There weren't enough words in the entire world to explain the amount of euphoria and happiness that swelled deep inside his heart. It certainly was love - lust, yes, but he didn't love her, yet.

'Jake, seriously, this is no time to be doing this.' Embry breathed heavily in his mind and distantly Jake could hear Paul growling low in his throat - probably a way to let him know he needed to back down. But Jake wasn't Alpha for nothing. He wasn't having any of that.

'Silence!'

The Alpha order rang true and it was quiet in seconds. His teeth was bared but he crouched down low so he could see more of the girl who was conversing with Sam. Damn it, why couldn't the bastard just get the hell out of his way?!

When he actually managed to see her fully, fuck, she was so tiny. She was about five feet four, nearly half a foot smaller than Sam. Probably even more if he was standing next to her. He was tall, along with the whole pack when they got together. Even Leah was tall and she'd already been tall pre-phase. They had bulging muscles and ripped thighs, board shoulders and large hands. But she was a small thing, barely tall enough to reach the middle of his chest. Her breasts weren't incredibly big but they were big enough to fit his palm. Her curvy waist was slim, just enough for him to rest his hands on while her slender legs hugged a pair of skinny jeans with a form-fitting white sleeve wrapped her torso.

Holy shit he couldn't believe how perfect she was. In his eyes, there was nothing about her physically that he didn't like.

Midnight locks tumbled down her back and spilled over her smooth shoulders as her head began turning around in his direction. Like, she could feel him staring at her.

'She really is beautiful...'

Paul snorted, but he agreed nonetheless. 'That's the understatement of the year. She's fucking hot.'

He growled low, rumbling from his chest and resonating throughout his mind as Paul and Embry's comments echoed in his ears. Then that odd feeling began welling up in his chest again, the more she turned around. Something was happening, he could feel it. Feel it in his bones and his wolf blood. A part of him was excited, anxious, probably the wolf in him. But another part was scared, apprehensive.

Jacob didn't know what he was expecting, why he had this apprehensive feeling at the pit of his stomach or why his ears perked up in excitement at the prospect of her seeing him. Or maybe it was just an attraction - a really, really strong attraction? He needed to get away. She'd see him and scream.

But he couldn't force himself to move. It was as if he couldn't - wouldn't, move until he could see her pretty face again. He growled low when Sam's eyes made contact with his from across the lawn and he barred his teeth in warning before his attention was caught once again.

When his brown eyes gazed at hers for the barest of seconds, Jacob's heart felt like it plummeted and effectively got stuck in his throat. There was a strange feeling crawling over his russet fur but he couldn't for the life of him, put his finger on it. All he knew was that she was important - so, fucking important.

'Oh shit!'

'What the fuck is going on - holy fuck, Jake, man, did you just - '

'Damn it, Black. Get the fuck out of there!'

There were too many voices in his head, all shouting at once that Jake could barely discern who was who until he managed to shut them out completely. His eyes strayed to the girl again - his...what was she to him? It didn't quite feel like an imprint bond but it was so damn close that he felt the inexorable need to be near her. He wanted to get closer and rub his maw against her tiny body, feel her fingers comb through his soft fur. But he fought against it and ran.

A part of him wanted to stay but he couldn't risk putting the pack in danger like that. Everything had been so sudden, too sudden, and now he felt that sense of unease and fear crawl over his fur. But the euphoria and swell of happiness rested on the vestiges of his heart.
