Caria - Chapter 1

When I awoke one morning Carl was right next to me, he had stayed up all night again.

"Carl, I told you to-"

He kissed me. "I'm sorry, I don't know where that came from." He shyly said looking at the ground.

"Oh, shut up!" I blurted, kissing him again.

Carl pulled me off the road as we were walking later that day.

"Maria... I um, I really... Um... I like you... Like, a lot..." Carl shyly explained.

"Aw, that's sweet. I like you too." I smiled. A walker came up from behind him. As he finished lopping off a walkers' head, he turned around to claim his prize. After gently kissing me on the lips, Carl smiled ever so slightly. I grabbed his hand as we walked on through the woods. It was a beautiful day with a breeze; the only noises to be heard were those of Carl and I walking, the leaves rustling in the wind, and the distinct sound of a walker moaning in the distance.

It's been nearly a week since we were separated from the others, Carl has been worrying about Rick, and I understand. However because I have no family left alive, I can't really say I know how it feels. As we walked, Carl held tight onto his gun, just in case any unexpected walkers show up.

A few hours later we stopped for a quick rest. The sun was high in the sky now, I suppose it was a little after noon. Carl sat on the ground, his long dark hair in his face. I walked over and knelt down beside him. He glanced up at me; I moved the hair out of his eyes, only to reveal his slightly freckled face, and even more tiredness in his radiant blue eyes. "Carl, baby, you need sleep. You haven't slept in days. I can take over watching us tonight, okay?" He sighed and nodded his head twice in agreement. I tore my eyes from his to examine our surroundings. We were in a small clearing in the middle of nowhere. The leaves on the ground looked like they hadn't been touched, which means walkers didn't travel through here. "I wonder why." I thought aloud.

Carl looked up at me, "What was that?" He asked me quietly.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I was thinking about why the walkers don't travel through here. You see look at the leaves on the ground, they aren't touched." I answered pointing at the places I had just explained.

"Yeah, you're right." He looked up at the sky, there were a few white clouds etched into the blueness of the sky, but other than that it was simply blank. I put my hand on his leg; he was startled by this and quickly looked down to see me staring at him.

"We will find Rick, and the others. We are all going to meet up again, I promise. But for now? We have each other; think about how it would be if we were alone? All I need is you, please baby, and please stop acting so sad." I attempted to comfort him; again all I got was a few nods of his head. We needed to trudge on, we were losing precious daylight.

"Baby, come on, we will never find them if we stay here." I proceeded to stand up and help him to his feet. I hugged him tightly, "I love you, no matter what happens I always will." He whispered in my ear.

I smiled, "I love you too." I kissed him. He smiled a genuine smile. "There is that smile I missed." I joked. He chuckled softly and started to pick up our supplies. All we had was some provisions, a few bottles of water, a blanket, a jacket for each of us, and some rope, in a backpack.
