Father's Day was coming to a close. Chuck stared at his sleeping baby boy, William Edmund Bartowski, already a year old in his crib and growing each day. His older brother, named after his grandfather, was asleep in the next room. So defenseless, his heart ached with love for this tiny creature that was part him and part Sarah. When he was born, his parents swore to themselves that they would give Chuck and his sister a normal life free from the turmoil of the past. Unfortunately they weren't able to keep their promise, but his sister did her best to do just that. Chuck swore to give the same to give his sons: a good life, a normal life.
"He's so beautiful," Sarah said lovingly as she stood at the doorway in her gray tank top and green pajama pants. He was amazed at how her figure had returned to its regular form, having burned the twenty-one pounds she had gained during their second son's pregnancy. But she was a consummate athlete and her fast metabolism.
"Yes, he is," Chuck whispered, staring at little William's chest rising and falling. A head already full of brown curly hair, everyone joked how much he looked like his father.
"What's wrong?" Sarah asked, wrapping her arms around her husband's shoulders. The husband and wife duo were thinking of moving near the Woodcombs in Chicago. In fact, Ellie had done the legwork for them already, suggesting several nice places, including one only half an hour from their house.
"I'm scared," Chuck said with trepidation in his brown eyes. The former spy was so paranoid about everything that involved those two little boys. He wanted everything to be perfect for them. Anything less was unacceptable, and it made him nervous.
"About our boys?" In a way, she was glad he was scared. Truth to tell, she was always so frightened.
"They are babies right now but one day they won't be and we won't be able to protect them," he said, his mind racing about all the possibilities. "God, I love them so much."
"Hey, we're Bartowskis. We're survivors, We battled the Ring, we battled Quinn, we battled Shaw and we prevailed. Anything the world throws at our boys, they'll make it."
Chuck held her arms tightly around him. "You always know how to lift a guy's spirits up."
"I learned from the best," she replied as she buried her face in his hair, smelling its comforting fragrance.
THE END
