I was going to surprise her. Our half a year anniversary was coming up and I had planned on showing up at her house by surprise that weekend. Take her to the riverside, eat some ice cream, maybe go a few rounds at the soccer field…
But I wanted to ease the tension first.
I knew there was still some tense air between us because of all the cancelled dates, arguments about responsibilities and such. So I was going to prank her. Tell her I was coming over this Monday but then call on Saturday to cancel but suddenly appear through the window like our previous dates.
I had missed her so much. It had been more than two weeks since the last time I had seen her. My work was demanding my time and attention, it wasn't easy to keep the relationship going this long and I hoped this might bring us back to what we once were in the beginning.
I arrived in Kurakara town just after breakfast. Usually she would be free till about dinner time and I was eager to see her. So I 'Flash-Stepped' there as fast as I could with my phone in my hand.
"Hello? Toshiro?" "Karin, how are you?" "I'm ok I guess. What about you? Has someone gone on and started another war up there?" The usually frosty captain chuckled quietly. "No, it's about next week's visit."
He landed just by the side of her window and peeked in sneakily.
Karin sat on her bed with one hand holding the phone to her ear and the other on her lap, clenched tightly in a fist. Her eyes were squeezed shut as if she was in pain. He almost ran in before he heard her reply through the phone. "You won't be coming?"
Remembering to keep his voice soft, "another pile of paperwork has found its way onto my desk. Maybe next weekend?"
He watched in horror as a single tear slid down her face and landed on her running shorts. "…Next weekend?" He struggled to keep himself in check as more tears trickled onto her clothes. "Yes, maybe Sunday. Is that okay?"
For a moment there was a pause and then the sound of bubbling laughter shattered his heart into a million pieces.
"Of course its okay, Baka. I'll see you then I guess."
'How much practice has she had,' he thought. Despite her shoulders shaking and tears streaming down her cheeks, her voice remained cheery and positive as if she was grinning. This was the voice he had always heard through the phone. Had she been crying then too?
Karin is a strong girl. He knows that, maybe even better than others and to make her cry is an astounding feat in itself.
"Are you sure Karin?"
There was another pause.
"Have you gone deaf Snowman? I said its okay. See you next Sunday I guess."
With that she hung up and the monotone beeps filled Hitsugaya's head. Meanwhile, Karin stood from her bed and wiped her eyes, staring at the wall.
For a split second, the Tenth Division Captain worried she had noticed him. But then she turned and went out her bedroom door.
He heard water running and knew she would still be crying in the shower.
Clenching his teeth and fists, Toshiro ran off as the guilt crushed him from the inside.
He showed up at the soccer field that evening and surprised her.
It was their last day as a couple because that day, Hitsugaya Toshiro ended the relationship.
Each step away from her sent another arrow through his heart and every tear down her cheek left a crack in Kurosaki Karin's soul.
They had given their love all they could but in the end, a relationship between a Shinigami Captain and Human, living in separate worlds altogether was too difficult.
AN: I couldn't really think of a better way to end it and I feel like angst was the way to go. Sorry for the super late update. Please Review:)!
