Chapter 1. Welcome to Freeside
The sun was rising on the horizon of the Mojave wasteland, the sun beams reached their way into the ever sprawling ruins of the town of Freeside. The town was a large area of slums outside of the New Vegas Strip. Travellers came and went through the town although they rarely stopped there, as Freeside was widely accepted as a near lawless area, the only thing holding it together being the presence of The Kings, a gang that acted as more of an unofficial police force for the area than a gang. On one fateful day, one particular air headed brunette was unfortunate enough to make an eventful stop in the crime ridden town of Freeside.
"Ooooohh!" Yui Hirasawa whispered to herself as she took in the marvels of the worn down town.
Yui was 18; she had brown hair, brown eyes and a warm smile that greeted everyone who looked her way. She was wearing a large blank beige shirt to accompany her large brown trousers that she also wore. She wore brown walking boots but no socks, which left many a blister down on her feet, but this failed to ail the enthusiastic young courier. A brown overcoat was also present on her attire. Behind her was a pack brahmin, a cow like creature that kept all of Yui's essentials on it, including food, water and whatever a journey needed for completion.
Apartment buildings laced the area that surrounded her as well as broken down houses and shops. Old non-functioning cars littered the streets around her and rubbish greeted her every step, but it was unlike anything she had ever seen back in the Hub. The young NCR citizen continued her journey throughout the neglected city, stopping at every little point of interest, whether it be an old grand fort or a trash can.
Eventually Yui made her way to the front of a store with a painted sign looming over it. "Ritsu's Relics" read the sign. The brunette contemplated going inside the store to meet the people, but some tall track suited people stopped her before she could enter the run down store in front of her.
"Give us your caps and no one gets hurt!" One of the track suited men said to her, while brandishing a small switchblade.
"I can't guarantee no one gets hurt, even if you give us those caps" Added the other; some brass knuckles were seated on his hand.
Yui turned to face the men, a look of terror in her eyes. Her eyes darted between the two brutes in front of her and her pack Brahmin caravan; two other thugs in rags were liberating all of its contents and placing it under their own care. Yui was about to call out to the men looting her belongings that the contents of the Brahmin were rightfully hers but another brunette beat her to it.
"Hey you! Get away from that pack brahmin!" Shouted the tawny haired brunette who was shaping up to look like Yui's saviour.
The brunette was wielding a scratched revolver, and was currently pointing it to the thugs. The thugs exchanged looks, and then made off with the things they'd taken from the brahmin. The girl equipped with the revolver then shifted her aim to the men looming over Yui. By this time Yui and her aggressors had their focus on the revolver girl. She shifted her aim to the man wielding the switchblade.
"Piss of girly, Freeside ain't a place for people like you." The man with the switchblade snarled at the revolver girl.
"I suggest you leave her alone or you're getting a lump of hot lead into your skull" She replied undaunted.
The thug held is ground, unbowed but before he could make a stab at the young girl a bullet lodged itself in his chest. The shot came not from the barrel of the brunette's revolver, but from the barrel of a 2mm pistol. The owner of the 2mm pistol was a man in a greezer jacket with jelled hair. The thug's lifeless body fell to the ground, switchblade still in hand. The brass knuckle wielding thug turned to run but a bullet found home in his left upper shoulder and he fell to the ground alongside his fallen fellow lowlife.
"Darn thugs, if I had my way the NCR soldier boys would have put 'em all down." The man with the pistol said as he lowered his still hot weapon.
"Well even if the NCR won't do anything about the crime in Freeside, it's good that Kings like you are." The brunette replied, smiling at the Kings gang member who stood beside her. The brunette was relieved that she wasn't the one who had needed to end 2 lives outside her store.
The Kings gang member turned and walked away from his two vanquished foes and continued patrolling the dirty streets. The brunette lowered her revolver and cast her gaze over to Yui. She was looking through all the pockets of her pack brahmin, checking to see what had been unconsentually relinquished from her ownership. Yui reached into one of the larger pouches and pulled out a can of beans. She then proceeded to hold the beans tight to her chest, a look of pure relief on her face, she was so caught up in her re-unition with the beans that she failed to realise the brunette standing behind her.
"Hey?" The girl with the revolver asked Yui, the girl caressing the beans quickly dropped them to the ground and spun around to face the girl who had saved her ever so precious beans.
"Hello, uh, thanks for the rescue back there." Yui said, looking at the floor and smiling sheepishly.
"No problem, I just wish Freeside wasn't so dangerous, well it used to be worse before the strip was established, but anyway. Want to come inside? The streets are no place for a squatter." The brunette said, gesturing to the store with the sign "Ritsu's relics" in front of them.
The store smelt like rotting faeces, the walls were dank and had paint peeling off at every point where paint could possibly peel off. Various nick nacks and weapons lined the walls, ready to be sold to people willing to pay the price for it. The floor was concrete and was cracked in certain places and little cockroaches scurried around the corners of the shop, looking for food and the sorts. The brunette lead Yui through the front of the store and into a room in the left hand side of the shop. Yui left her pack brahmin in the main room of the one story store, as she doubted that the brahmin would fit in the small room the brunette was leading her into.
The room had an "employees only" sign on its door. The employees only room was much alike the rest of the store, rotting at its seems, but nevertheless the brunette had a look of pride plastered onto her face as she strode through the store. Two sleeping bags lay on the floor next to a pistol and a clever, by the looks of it both were used on a regular basis. The revolver girl eventually stopped and seated herself on a wooden stool that stood beside a table and another 3 stools. The girl rested her revolver on the table, Yui flinched, the girl picked up on this and reassured "Don't worry 'bout this little thing, it's not even loaded. Bullets are really expensive here. So you gotta save 'em for when you really need them." Once Yui had returned to a normal state the girl gestured for Yui to seat herself on one of the other stools, Yui seated herself and the brunette took a breath and begun to speak.
"I'm Ritsu Tainaka, and WELCOME! To my humble little store, I own this place, well… I co-own it with my best friend Mio; she's out at the moment, scavenging for things to sell so that we don't die of malnutrition anytime soon." Ritsu confidently explained to the traveller seated next to her.
Yui took the que that it was now the time for her to explain herself. "I'm Yui Hirasawa, I was raised in the Hub and I deliver packages with my sister Ui. We normally only do deliveries in the Hub, but someone offered us a lot of money if we delivered a package to the strip, and so I made my way out here." Yui replied.
"Well do you wanna stay here for now; the streets aren't safe for squatters." Ritsu asked, a small smile creeping onto her face.
"Sure! I'm all for staying round a friends for the night!" Yui beamed, Ritsu smiled at the
notion that she was now a friend of the young courier.
Both girls smiled at each other for a short period of time before Ritsu spoke up again.
"You're from NCR territory right?" Ritsu asked her.
"100 percent!" Yui exclaimed, giving Ritsu a powerful thumbs up and an encouraging look.
Ritsu tilted her head to the side slightly. "So, what's it like back in the Hub?" She asked, as she lived in near lawless Freeside, she was wondering what life would be like in a civilized place in the wasteland.
"Oh it's wonderful!" Yui exclaimed, she suddenly looked at home, despite being hundreds of miles away from it. Yui begun to share stories of her families stop and how her parents were both NCR troopers and because of that they were nearly always away. She told Ritsu about how she lived with her sister and ran the store with her, although "ran with her" is an over exaggeration, because in reality all she did was point people into the stop because she failed to do any of the other jobs that were required to run the small stop.
Ritsu took in every bit of it; it was just as she'd expected it to be. A wholesome place for everyone to live in harmony under the law, but apparently corruption was rife in the NCR. She decided not to question the airhead about NCR politics because she doubted Yui even knew what a politician was.
A silence then engulfed the room as both girls looked around the employee's only room, both searching for something worthy of sparking a conversation. Eventually Ritsu realised the absence of Yui's apparent travelling partner.
"So why isn't your sister here making the delivery with you?" Ritsu asked, she had a small look of fear in her eyes that maybe her new friend's sister had succumbed to the perils of the wasteland.
"Oh Ui? No, she got sick the day before we had to leave to make the delivery so I went out by myself." Yui explained happily, she seemed rather unphased by the previous concern in Ritsu's voice. "Also you mentioned someone else earlier." Yui added.
"Yea Mio, what about her?" Ritsu asked.
"Well I was wondering whether she'd be okay with me staying here and all." Yui asked with slight worry that her newfound safe-haven would soon be relinquished from her. "She'll be more than alright with it, she's quite the fan of the NCR, says they'll deal with the legion, but I doubt it." Ritsu explained, she glanced over to Yui and saw the girl ponder something for a moment before she spoke.
"Who's the legion?" Yui asked, Ritsu looked momentarily shocked before she spoke
"What do you mean 'who's the legion', the legion are the ones who are on the verge of taking over the NCR, I mean you're an NCR citizen, how've you not heard of them?" Ritsu asked in almost disbelief, surely the NCR had made its citizens aware of their impending doom at the hands of the vast slaving empire known as Caesars legion?
Yui laughed and shook her head. "You're funny Ritsu." She nonchalantly said, at this Ritsu begun trying to persuade the girl that what she said was true. Ritsu told Yui tales of people being kidnapped by legionaries and sold to the highest bidder and stories about entire NCR squads being wiped out single headedly at the hands of the legion. She also lectured Yui about the fierce fighting along the Colorado River and the size of the legion. Yui nodded the whole way through, she was heavily conflicted on whether her new friend was being entirely truthful or not. Eventually Ritsu's talk came to a close.
"And for all we know they could control the rest of pre-war America!" Ritsu exclaimed as she finished her aggressive lecture to the ignorant airhead. Yui looked at her, a look of ignorant bliss on her face. "Eeeh hee, is that right?" was all she had to give back to Ritsu after she had concluded her speech.
Ritsu hung her head low and inhaled deeply. She looked into Yui's eye and realised that the girl would never be able to comprehend the atrocities of the legion and gave up trying to tell her. Her attention shifted to Yui's brahmin which was poking its head through the door, trying to find wherever her master had gone. Ritsu laid her eyes upon something brown sticking out of one of the brahmin's many pouches. The girl got up and begun walking over to the brahmin. "What are you doing Ritsu?"
"What's…?" Ritsu suddenly began sprinting over to the Brahmin, Yui looked on with a look of slight concern on her face.
"THIS!" Ritsu exclaimed as she pulled the brown thing out of the bag, she held it above her head in a rather dramatic fashion before bringing it down for her to see. Her eyes opened wide in surprise at the guitar in her hand.
"Yui!"
"Yes!"
"Do you play guitar?"
"Yes!"
A look of excitement materialised on Ritsu's worn face. "I play drums!" Ritsu exclaimed to the now energised Yui. Ritsu then took Yui's hand and led her out of the employee's only room and to another room that was no more filthy or clean than the last. On the wall of the room there was a broken clock and beside a broken bookshelf there was a cracked photo frame with a picture of Ritsu and a taller black haired girl inside of it. Inside the room lay a few drums and cymbals scattered on the floor. Yui's look of excitement quickly shifted into confusion. "You play these?"
"Well 'play' was a bit of an overstatement." Ritsu sheepishly said while rubbing the back of her head and looking down, clearly embarrassed by her misuse of words.
Ritsu then knelt down on the floor and picked up a much worn drumstick and what looked like a lever and begun to tap some of the drums near her with it. She managed to formulate a, if not messy, beat with the drums. Many of the drums were very dirty or had holes in them and the cymbals were very rusted but never the less produced an acceptable sound. Her gaze then landed on Yui.
"Play me a guitar solo!" She exclaimed, a light in her eyes.
Yui frowned and nodded defiantly and proceeded to strum the guitar wildly in a very disjointed manor. Ritsu's look of excitement slowly faded to the point where she was frowning at the girl who appeared to not have any experience with her instrument.
"Can you actually play guitar?" Ritsu asked, already knowing the answer.
"Eee-hee, no, I found it on the way here." She explained as she smiled sheepishly.
"Then why did you tell me you could?"
"I wanted to impress you."
Yui's response made Ritsu's brain crawl to a standstill. Nobody had ever tried to impress her before, well maybe except that time Mio had attempted to sleep in a different room of the store to her to prove she wasn't scared but had eventually crawled back into the employees only room, begging Ritsu to let her sleep there. But nevertheless, someone she had only met a matter of hours ago wanting to impress her? This was a welcome surprise to the shopkeeper.
"Well if it's for that reason then I guess I can forgive you... For a price…"
"What's the price?" Yui said as she rummaged around in one of her overcoat pockets for some spare change. Yui's lack of fear to the ominous response from Ritsu made her wonder how she made it all the way out to Freeside by herself.
"The price" Ritsu crossed her arms and inhaled. "Is information" She stuck her finger in the air as she said it, Yui looked at her in confusion.
"I can tell you all about my sister's cooking, she cooks really well!" Yui beamed, despite it not being the information Ritsu desired, Yui's innocence still bought a smile to her face.
"Tell me, what do you think of my mighty store? And don't give me any poppycock, give it to me as it is!" Ritsu asked defiantly.
"Eee—hee, it's filthy but it's got its charm" Yui honestly said, Ritsu was partially taken back by the girls bluntness, but nevertheless she took it as a compliment.
Both girls smiled at each other before Ritsu suggested the idea of playing together, drums side by side with guitar. Yui jumped at the idea and they both started playing their instruments, well, playing is a little bit of an overstatement and the sound that came from the room didn't resemble music in the slightest but that didn't hinder the two girls from enjoying themselves.
After a solid 20 minutes of playing their instruments, Ritsu finally stopped banging her broken drums. She glanced up at Yui, the girl looked worn out, maybe even beyond worn out, but her eyes met Ritsu's and they had the same look of joy in them that Ritsu's had.
Both girls then began chatting about their lives and things they liked or heard. Ritsu told Yui tall tales of 'The Burned Man' and the 'Repconn Ghoul Cult'. Yui however, shared fables of the time she helped Ui make a roast dinner for the town mayor (it was later discovered that all she'd done to help was glaze the chicken before it went in the oven.) and of the time when she had unsuccessfully attempted to domesticate a radroach.
Eventually Ritsu instinctively looked at the clock on her wall, forgetting that it was broken. Once it re registered in her brain that the information she was looking for wouldn't be acquired from the clock on her wall, she strolled out of the room and peeked outside. Despite being pitch black locals still littered the streets; some would say there were more out at night than at day. Ritsu returned to see Yui kneeling down and looking through Ritsu's broken bookshelf, a few disregarded books lay at her feet. Once she Yui felt the precense of another person, she stopped looking through the bookcase and spun around to speak to Ritsu.
"Ritsu, can I have this book?" Yui was holding up a rather mangled red book, although from Ritsu's distance she couldn't make out what it said. Ritsu came closer and closed the distance between her and the book; it read 'Guitar for absolute beginners'.
"Sure thing, maybe one day we'll be big shots on the Strip, playing in the aces theatre with Mr. House himself begging us for an encore!" Ritsu joked; Yui looked slightly touched by her friend's words. "Anyway, its dark out, we should head to bed." Ritsu added, trying to ignore the sparkle in Yui's eyes. 10 seconds passed and Yui was still entranced by the words Ritsu had spoken, 'big shots on the strip' 'Mr. House himself begging for an encore', these words made her believe that for the first time in her life, she had a goal she wanted to achieve. Ritsu eventually kneeled down next to her and snapped her fingers to try and break the musical trance that had taken ahold of Yui. Yui suddenly jolted and looked Ritsu in the eyes and abruptly shouted "I don't have a bed to sleep in!"
"I guess she did hear me" Ritsu thought to herself while Yui stared her down.
Ritsu gestured to a crumpled up green thing lying on the floor in the corner of the room, "Well I have an extra sleeping bag if you want it." She offered.
Yui approached the green crumpled up thing. "What kind of madman are you?" Yui said as she held up the sleeping bag.
"It's not that bad, I sleep in one every night." Ritsu explained, sadness suddenly washed over Yui "You poor soul." She cooed as she slowly embraced Ritsu in an unneeded reassurance hug. "Everything will be okay." She continued as she attempted to soothe an uncomfortable Ritsu.
All Ritsu could do was gently pat her back and give her an unsure smile in return. Eventually both girls were lying on the floor of the employees only room, Ritsu was fast asleep, revolver in hand. Yui had had no such luck in sleeping from the constant gunfire and shouting in the background, she tried to focus herself on the midnight starts she could see through a sizeable hole in the roof. "I wonder what Ui's doing back at home, I wonder if she's any better." Yui thought to herself. Suddenly the thought to make a letter to send back home struck her, and she immediately sat up to begin working on it, but found herself too tired to move any further, so she laid back down and finally fell asleep.
